On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day this year (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025), the image of the red flag with a yellow star appears brightly on many dishes and drinks as a way to spread the spirit of patriotism. From cakes, cream cakes, to cups of coffee, the image of the national flag is cleverly integrated, inspiring patriotism in a new way. This is not only the creativity of young people, but also the way they express national pride through the language of cuisine.
A bakery in Thanh Xuan (Hanoi) has launched a limited edition cake called "Patriotic Cake" to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and the reunification of the country. On the round cakes with a red background and a bronze drum pattern printed on them is a prominent yellow image of the S-shaped map of Vietnam, along with meaningful messages: "There are cakes that are not only made from flour and eggs, but are molded with national pride. The S-shaped map - located right in the center of the cake, is like the heart of Vietnam beating between generations. The bronze drum pattern - echoes thousands of years of culture, wrapping history in every line. The bright red color is like the flag, like passion, like the never-ending desire to protect the country. This is not a cake to be eaten in a hurry. But it is a gentle reminder: "We are Vietnamese, red blood, yellow skin and we are proud of that".
Inspired by the image of the red flag with a yellow star, another cake shop chain in Hanoi also launched a set of red flag with a yellow star cakes that are extremely beautiful and impressive. The shop said: "This is not just a simple cake, but also a tribute to those who built today's peace, a meaningful reminder for the current generation to remember, cherish, and continue what our ancestors have built.
Putting national pride into each small cake made by her own hands, Ms. Hoang Nguyen Lan Nhi wrote: "The wagashi cake bears the image of the national flag - a bright red background, a five-pointed yellow star, this is not only a symbol, but also the soul of the nation. That flag has flown on the roof of the Independence Palace, on the mountain tops, in the middle of the ocean... wherever there are Vietnamese people, there is that sacred pride present. On the small cake, the flag is not only an image, but also the heartbeat of millions of hearts who have fought, who have held their heads high, to keep that red color never fading. Each star represents a class of people, a part of the Fatherland together making history. The sweetness of the cake blends with the sacred red color, like a gentle reminder: today's freedom, begins with the aspiration, blood and intact faith of many previous generations".
Ms. Do Thu Ngoc, 35 years old, in Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi, chose to make xu xe cakes in the shape of the national flag. At first, she made cakes with mung bean filling but failed, so she had to fix it by drawing and cutting star-shaped decals and pasting them onto the cake crust. Later, she used a recipe using tapioca starch, mung beans and red color from gac fruit to make the product more perfect. Ms. Ngoc explained that the red color of the cake represents blood and sacrifice, the yellow star symbolizes faith, solidarity and aspiration. The Hanoi woman brought "patriotic cakes" to give to relatives and friends and received an enthusiastic response. "Patriotism does not have to be something big, it can be from small things, familiar cultural features, as long as it is done with all your heart," she said.
The cake recreating the moment tank 390 crashed through the gate of Independence Palace by Nguyen Thi Thuy Duong, 30 years old, Thanh Xuan district, Hanoi, has "stormed" social networks in recent days. "I want to recreate the symbolic image of victory day", Ms. Duong said. In about an hour, she completed the cake with the tank-shaped part made of fresh cream. Due to material limitations, she omitted some complicated details such as chains and wheels but tried to stay close to the original. For Duong, the cake is a way to express gratitude to the generation of fathers and brothers who sacrificed their blood for peace and national unification.
Dang Van Viet and his son make pana cotta cakes shaped like the national flag at home in Hanoi on April 19. According to Viet, the 50th anniversary of the country's reunification is an opportunity to remind his children of the glorious history, of gratitude to previous generations who sacrificed for peace and to cherish the present. The activity not only helps the family bond but is also a way for him to convey patriotism and understanding of the special holiday to the younger generation in a natural and interesting way. "The moment I get together with my family on this occasion, I love and am grateful for living in peacetime even more," said the 38-year-old father.
Ms. Duan Nguyen, owner of a cake and jelly shop in District 9, Ho Chi Minh City, is constantly creating jelly cakes shaped like the red flag with a yellow star. Not only does she sell them, she also gives them away for free to customers and loved ones as a way to spread her love for her homeland and people. “Seeing the national flag hanging everywhere, I feel very proud and want to express that through each cake. That's why I started making flag-shaped jelly jars and have continuously received love from everyone,” Ms. Duan shared.
Not only does she sell these cakes, she also gives them away to customers and relatives, showing her national pride.
In Hanoi, Ms. Ngo Tuyet Nhung is equally busy as her crepe shop receives hundreds of orders every day. Each durian crepe is not only a delicious dish but also bears the shape of the red flag with a yellow star, becoming a meaningful gift for patriots. “This durian crepe is made from fresh ingredients, combined with a fragrant crust and a red flag with a yellow star that is easy to recognize. Every day, my shop has to make 700 to 800 pieces to meet the demand,” Ms. Nhung said.
Not only appearing in bakeries, red flag cakes with yellow stars have become a hot topic on online sales platforms. Social networking sites are constantly sharing images of these cakes, making them a special trend during this year's holiday season.
In addition to cakes, many shops and cafes also create products with the red flag and yellow star such as coffee, watermelon, cappuccino... bringing diversity in choice, making the festival atmosphere even more exciting.
Joining the joyful and exciting atmosphere of the country welcoming the 'Reunification Day', in recent days, young people in many places such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have been checking in at coffee shops with drinks bearing the image of the red flag with a yellow star. Not only to enjoy the taste, young people also see this as a way to express patriotism in a modern, creative and friendly style.
Through each photo, each small action, the spirit of national pride is ignited in a youthful, intimate and inspiring way – exactly the way the young generation is preserving and renewing their love for the country today.
