The Deo But road tunnel project under the Vung Ang - Bung expressway component project is one of three North - South expressway component projects in the East phase 2021 - 2025 being implemented through Ha Tinh. This is a mountain tunnel with a length of nearly 1,000m, the northern tunnel tube is located in Ky Lac commune, Ky Anh district and the southern tunnel tube is located in Ky Hoa commune, Ky Anh town. The project consists of 2 single tunnel tubes designed with reinforced concrete shells with 3 lanes for motor vehicles, with an investment capital of more than 1,000 billion VND.

Using robots to construct key projects
In July 2023, Son Hai Group began drilling the first bit of the Deo But tunnel. After more than 10 months of construction, the 840m long right branch was officially opened to traffic on the occasion of the 134th anniversary of Uncle Ho's birthday on May 19, 2024. Up to now, the left branch has also been opened to traffic, connecting with the Bung - Van Ninh project to be ready to "share the load" of transportation for National Highway 1A.
According to the plan, this project is expected to be completed in December 2025, at the same time as the Vung Ang - Bung expressway section, but due to the requirement to speed up the progress to reach the finish line on April 30, the contractor has increased the manpower and construction machinery to work "three shifts, four shifts" day and night, during the holidays. Son Hai Group is committed to completing and basically completing the essential items to open the road on April 30 as promised to the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction).
Sharing about the process of conquering the Deo But tunnel for more than 20 months, the project management representative of Son Hai Group said that the construction of the Deo But tunnel encountered many difficulties, especially the rather weak geological foundation, with loose interspersed rocks and soil, heavy rainfall, and a lot of underground water.
To ensure progress, the construction process of the unit must implement a series of measures such as strengthening the supporting structure, constructing an inverted arch, and using robots to work non-stop to reinforce the tunnel arch, construct concrete shells, and create supporting structures for the tunnel. Along with mobilizing modern machinery and equipment, the contractor has assigned engineers, officers, and workers with many years of experience in the field of road tunnel construction to ensure the construction process is smooth and safe.
Along with the mountain tunnel, due to complex terrain conditions, many sections of the expressway also have to build viaducts across many rivers, streams, lakes, and dams, including components up to 50m high, which are also significant challenges for contractors. Among these, viaduct No. 1 connecting two high hills, spanning a nearly 1,000m long valley located in Ky Hoa commune, Ky Anh town (Ha Tinh) is one of the construction items on difficult terrain of the Vung Ang - Bung expressway project. Viaduct No. 1 is designed with 2 abutments with 22 pillars, of which the highest pillar is up to 50m above the ground adjacent to the pillar foundation, with a total investment of 300 billion VND.
Hoa Binh 479 Joint Stock Company - the construction unit said that the area through Ky Hoa commune is a valley, low terrain, with mountains on both sides, and a deep abyss below, so the only feasible option is to build a viaduct to cross the mountain. The Vung Ang - Bung expressway alone has 28 bridges of all kinds, of which 5 bridges numbered from 1 to 5 through Ky Hoa commune have difficult construction locations, crossing mountains and lakes.
Among these, the highlight of the most difficult projects is bridge number 2 and bridge number 3 with a length of 1,000m running along the Kim Son reservoir, constructed in a continuous arrangement, crossing mountains and lakes before connecting with overpass number 5 to lead to Deo But tunnel.

Speed up to join the joy of national reunification day
Mr. Nguyen Khac Trung, Director of the Ham Nghi - Vung Ang Expressway Project Management Board (Thang Long Project Management Board - Ministry of Construction) said that in order to finish the project 8 months ahead of schedule, the construction unit of the expressway component packages through Ha Tinh province had to "overcome the sun and rain", overcome difficulties in both objective and subjective conditions, and work almost day and night, even during holidays.
In difficult packages such as underpasses, overpasses, river and lake bridges, the investor encouraged the construction units to take advantage of sunny days at the construction site and switch to construction in tunnels and under bridges on rainy days to speed up progress. Thanks to that, after 20 months of construction efforts, the nearly 110km long expressway through Ha Tinh province has been completed, connecting with the Dien Chau - Bai Vot expressway and the Bung - Van Ninh expressway, contributing to bringing the North - South expressway project closer to unifying into a strip of land from North to South.
To complete the project on schedule as directed by the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Construction, contractors, investors and localities have made great efforts to overcome all difficulties in weather and terrain, increase human resources and machinery, including the support of robots to ensure quality, aesthetics and progress. Up to now, these items have been basically completed, contributing to the national goal of having over 3,000km of expressways nationwide by 2025.
To achieve the above goal, recently, at 28 expressway component projects nationwide with a plan to be completed in 2025 with a total length of about 1,188km, investors, contractors and localities are racing against time to bring the project to the finish line on time.
On this April 30 holiday, the whole country opened to traffic the main routes of 4 expressway projects with a length of 158km, including the Bai Vot - Ham Nghi, Ham Nghi - Vung Ang, Bung - Van Ninh and Bien Hoa - Vung Tau projects. Also on this occasion, the Ben Luc - Long Thanh project, the 20km section from National Highway 1A to Nguyen Van Tao intersection and the final section of the Van Phong - Nha Trang project, 70km long, were also completed and put into operation.
