Domestic pepper prices updated on the afternoon of April 14, 2025 |
Domestic pepper prices today fluctuated little, remaining flat and at a high level. According to statistics, last week, the domestic pepper market increased by 1,000 - 2,000 VND/kg.
Experts say that in early April 2025, when the US announced plans to impose a 46% reciprocal tax on Vietnam, pepper prices began to fall continuously. Importers stopped buying to wait for further moves from the leaders of the two countries. The market became stagnant, leading to a sharp drop in pepper prices.
However, the US later announced that it would postpone the imposition of reciprocal tariffs on Vietnam as well as some other partners for 90 days. The current tax rate on pepper is 10%, and immediately, importers increased their purchases.
Along with that, information about this year's harvest with lower output than last year is very popular in Vietnam. These factors have helped pepper prices increase again last week, and at the same time, the expectation is towards 160,000 VND/kg.
Farmers in Dak Nong province harvest pepper |
According to assessments, key pepper growing areas across the country recorded a decrease in the 2025 crop yield compared to previous years. The reason was due to unfavorable weather during the flowering and fruiting stages of pepper plants. Limited supply resulted in a small amount of goods sold on the market, creating clear competition in purchasing activities.
Many farmers are now hoarding their products after harvest, instead of selling them immediately, with the expectation that pepper prices will continue to increase in the short term. The psychology of waiting for prices to increase among farmers, combined with strong purchasing demand from export enterprises, is becoming an important driving force to help domestic pepper prices increase again.
According to preliminary statistics of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), in March, Vietnam imported 4,940 tons of pepper of all kinds with a total turnover of 28.9 million USD. Compared to the previous month, the import volume increased by 68.7%, the turnover increased by 81.3% and compared to the same period in 2024, the import volume increased by 32.5%, the turnover increased by 104.9%.
