In the 2025-2026 school year, the province has 37 high schools with about 9,600 students admitted to grade 10. According to regulations, each grade 10 student must choose 4 elective subjects, in addition to the compulsory subjects of Math, Literature, Foreign Language, History, Physical Education , National Defense and Security Education, Career Guidance Activities, and Local Education. Realizing the importance of choosing a subject combination, since the beginning of July, high schools in the province have proactively organized specific counseling and orientation for grade 10 students.
For example, at Huu Lung High School, a school with a large enrollment scale of nearly 800 10th grade students in the 2025-2026 school year, the school has implemented counseling work early and systematically. Based on the physical conditions, teaching staff and students' wishes, the school has built 5 subject combinations. At the same time, in early July, the school gathered all newly admitted 10th grade students to distribute combination registration forms; organized class activities to listen to information dissemination, through which homeroom teachers and subject teachers directly advised, helping students consider carefully before making a choice.
According to research at high schools across the province, based on the teaching staff, facilities and class organization capacity, each school organizes from 5 to 8 subject groups, divided into two basic groups: natural sciences and social sciences.
At the Provincial Boarding Ethnic High School, this year the school has 180 grade 10 students. Right in the first gathering of grade 10 students, the school not only received applications but also organized a general meeting, clearly introducing the new general education program, analyzing each combination and corresponding career orientation. Ms. Nguyen Thanh Thao, Vice Principal of the school said: "The advisory team not only introduced the program, but also analyzed the teaching conditions at the school and career trends. From there, it helps students and parents understand better when choosing the right combination."
At Viet Bac High School, the school has also implemented subject combination consultation this July. With more than 500 10th grade students this school year, the school has built 6 subject combinations, including two main groups: social science subjects (Literature, History, Geography) and natural science subjects (Math, Physics, Chemistry). Based on the announced combination framework, homeroom teachers and the counseling team coordinate to guide students in class discussions, distribute registration forms and provide direct consultation for each specific case. Student Bành Phương Diệp, a 10th grader, shared: “The teachers have advised and introduced me to combination 1 (math, physics, chemistry), which includes my strengths in math and chemistry. I boldly chose this combination and hope that it will help me choose a university that suits my future aspirations.”
Not only stopping at initial consultation, after students choose a combination, homeroom teachers continue to monitor the student's learning and psychological situation, promptly discuss and adjust when necessary. Along with that, during the school year, schools regularly organize career counseling activities through class activities, experiential activities, and career orientation topics, helping students consolidate their choices, gain a deeper understanding of the learning path and requirements of each major in the future.
According to the plan, by the end of July 2025, high schools in the province will complete the registration of subject combinations for 10th grade students. Early consultation, systematic organization and close support from schools will not only help students choose the right combination, promote their strengths, but also create favorable conditions for schools to proactively develop teaching plans, choose textbooks, and fully prepare conditions to enter the new school year on schedule.
