Ride electric motorbikes legally, protect yourself and the community

In recent years, young people have increasingly preferred to use electric motorbikes. However, besides the convenience, the danger of traffic accidents related to this type of vehicle is also very unpredictable.

Mr. Nguyen Van Du (Ninh Thanh ward, Tay Ninh province) expressed: "My eldest son is in 9th grade, he asked his parents to buy him an electric motorbike to go to school but the family did not agree. I realized that he is not old enough to drive this type of vehicle and does not have a solid knowledge and skills to participate in traffic."

Ms. Tran Thi Hong (Chau Thanh commune, Tay Ninh province) shared: “I have witnessed many cases of students driving very dangerously. There are many collisions that occur because the drivers do not comply with traffic regulations.”

According to the provisions of the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety in 2024: “Driving licenses include the following classes: Class A1 is granted to drivers of two-wheeled motorbikes with a cylinder capacity of up to ^125cm3 or an electric motor capacity of up to 11kW; Class A is granted to drivers of two-wheeled motorbikes with a cylinder capacity of over 125cm3 or ^an electric motor capacity of over 11kW and types of vehicles specified for Class A1 driving licenses,…”.

Therefore, to drive an electric motorbike on the road, a driving license is required depending on the electric motor capacity of the vehicle. Electric motorbikes with an electric motor capacity of up to 11kW require a class A1 driving license; with an electric motor capacity of over 11kW, a class A driving license is required.

Lieutenant Colonel Cao Thanh Vu - an officer of the Traffic Police Department, Provincial Police said: "When driving an electric motorbike, the driver must understand the regulations of the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety. In particular, they must wear a helmet when participating in traffic, and the helmet must meet quality standards to prevent head injuries in case of an accident. The driver also needs to be equipped with rearview mirrors on both sides for easy observation when changing direction, and strictly comply with other traffic safety regulations such as not running red lights or driving in the wrong direction."

In addition, people also need to pay attention to the speed regulations when traveling on the road by electric motorbikes. According to Article 8 of Circular 31/2019/TT-BGTVT, for specialized motorbikes, motorbikes (including electric motorbikes) and similar vehicles, when participating in traffic, the maximum speed is not more than 40 km/h. Therefore, the maximum speed allowed for electric motorbike drivers when traveling on the road is 40 km/h.

Faced with the situation where electric motorbike drivers have not complied with traffic laws, potentially posing a safety risk, recently, the Traffic Police Department's Traffic Safety, Investigation, and Accident Resolution and Violation Handling Team, in coordination with other units, has organized traffic safety law dissemination for the public, especially students in the area.

In particular, the officers emphasized wearing standard helmets when participating in traffic by motorbike, scooter, electric bicycle, electric motorbike; absolutely do not race, weave, swerve, or use mobile phones while driving.

In the coming time, the Traffic Police force will continue to strengthen patrols, control, and strictly handle cases of electric motorbike drivers violating road traffic laws, contributing to ensuring traffic order and safety in the province./.
