Most are banking billionaires

For many years, the list of the richest people on the Vietnamese stock market has always been dominated by men. However, as time has come, the number of wealthy women has increased and the majority are concentrated in the banking industry.

Welcoming 2024, the position of the richest woman in Vietnam still belongs to Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, CEO of low-cost airline Vietjet . However, Ms. Thao's field of operation is very broad. Besides aviation, Ms. Thao is also a big name in the real estate and banking industries.

Currently, the real estate stocks in Ms. Thao's ecosystem are not listed, so the asset value of the richest woman in Vietnam is only calculated through the aviation industry (VJC shares of Vietjet Air) and the banking industry (HDB shares of Ho Chi Minh City Development Joint Stock Commercial Bank - HDBank ).

Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, CEO of Vietjet, is continuously honored as the Richest Woman in Vietnam.

As of December 31, 2023, the value of HDB and VJC shares owned by Ms. Thao was worth VND23,635 billion, less than 1 billion USD. However, according to Forbes' calculations, Ms. Thao's assets amounted to USD2.4 billion (about VND58,560 billion). Thanks to that, Ms. Thao is considered the second richest person in Vietnam, only after Mr. Pham Nhat Vuong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vingroup .

The position of the second richest woman on the Vietnamese stock market belongs to Ms. Vu Thi Hien with assets of up to 7,678 billion VND. Ms. Hien has been in this position for many years but she is still a mysterious face in the market. All information about Ms. Hien that has been made public is that she is the wife of Mr. Tran Dinh Long, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hoa Phat Group and owns Hoa Phat shares.

As the sole representative of the real estate industry, Ms. Pham Thu Huong is in the Top 3 Richest Women on the Vietnamese Stock Exchange. Thanks to holding a large number of VIC shares of Vingroup Corporation, Ms. Huong has assets of more than 7,500 billion VND.

Ms. Pham Thu Huong is the wife of Mr. Pham Nhat Vuong and also the Vice Chairman of Vingroup's Board of Directors. Ms. Huong is known as one of the most talented and discreet female generals in the market.

In the Top 10 Richest Women in Vietnam, only 3 people are directly involved in running businesses. Besides Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao and Ms. Pham Thu Huong, there is also Ms. Truong Thi Le Khanh, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Vinh Hoan Joint Stock Company and member of the Board of Directors of Sa Giang Import-Export Joint Stock Company.

Nearly 80 million VHC shares bring Ms. Truong Thi Le Khanh assets worth nearly 5,900 billion VND. Thanks to that, Ms. Khanh ranks 7th on this list. Besides Ms. Vu Thi Hien, Ms. Le Khanh is a rare face in the manufacturing industry to reach this high position.

In the Top 10 richest women in Vietnam, there are only 2 manufacturing billionaires, 1 real estate billionaire and 7 banking billionaires. Besides Ms. Thao, the remaining billionaires come from Vietnam Prosperity Joint Stock Commercial Bank - VPBank and Vietnam Technological and Commercial Joint Stock Bank - Techcombank.

The 4th, 5th, 9th and 10th positions belong to the tycoon VPBank with representatives being Ms. Hoang Anh Minh, wife of Mr. Ngo Chi Dung - Chairman of the Board of Directors of VPBank with 5,848 billion VND, Ms. Vu Thi Quyen - mother of Mr. Ngo Chi Dung with 5,833 billion VND, Ms. Kim Ngoc Cam Ly, wife of Mr. Bui Hai Quan - Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of VPBank with 5,130 billion VND and Ms. Ly Thi Thu Ha, mother of Mr. Lo Bang Giang - Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of VPBank with 5,050 billion VND.

Positions number 6 and number 8 belong to the giant Techcombank with two representatives: Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, wife of Mr. Ho Hung Anh - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Techcombank with 5,132 billion VND and Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Tam, mother of Mr. Ho Hung Anh with 5,100 billion VND.

It can be seen that in the Top 10 richest women in Vietnam, except for Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao and Ms. Truong Thi Le Khanh, all the remaining faces are wives or mothers of the richest tycoons in Vietnam. Very few people directly participate in running businesses, but only own huge assets through holding large amounts of stocks.
