How is avocado good for sleep and cholesterol?

Eating an avocado a day may help improve sleep and support cholesterol levels, according to a six-month study of nearly 1,000 adults in the United States.

Participants were divided into two groups, one group ate one avocado per day, the other ate a maximum of two per month. Neither group changed their other eating habits.

Results showed that the group that ate avocados daily did not improve their overall heart health score on the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 scale, but did report improvements in diet quality, sleep, and cholesterol levels.

Avocados contain magnesium, potassium and healthy fats that help improve sleep quality.

According to Mr. John Saito, an expert at the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, avocado is not a food that helps you sleep immediately, but it contains many nutrients that support sleep such as magnesium, potassium and healthy fats.

Eating regular, balanced meals with good fats, complex carbohydrates, and protein will help your body maintain a stable circadian rhythm, thereby improving sleep quality.

Avocados are considered a rich source of monounsaturated fats, the type of fat that is good for the heart.

According to studies, replacing saturated fats like butter or cheese with monounsaturated fats from avocados helps reduce the risk of heart disease.

One medium avocado provides about 10 grams of fiber, which helps reduce cholesterol and heart risk.

Soluble fiber in avocado when entering the body will form a gel layer that binds with bile acids and bad cholesterol in the small intestine, helping to remove them from the body.

Too much LDL (bad cholesterol) buildup in the blood vessels can lead to blockages, causing angina or heart attack.

It is important to maintain a varied diet.

However, not everyone is suitable for eating avocado every day. People who are allergic to avocado, need to eat less potassium or are on a very low-fat diet as prescribed by their doctor should limit it.

According to Jamie Mok, a nutritionist in the US, many other foods can also bring similar benefits, especially for sleep, including walnuts, fatty fish like salmon or some herbal teas.

However, Ms. Jamie Mok also added that no food can change your overall health, but requires a combination of many factors from diet, lifestyle to reasonable exercise and rest habits.

You don't have to eat every day, it's important to maintain a varied, balanced diet.
