Four years after its launch, Windows 11 has officially surpassed Windows 10 in market share and become the world's most popular computer operating system.

According to the latest report from Statcounter (as of July 2025), Windows 11 accounts for 50.88% of the market share, surpassing Windows 10's 46.2%. This growth is strongly driven by the fact that Windows 10 is about to end its support lifecycle.

Windows 11's market share is equivalent to about 700 million monthly active devices, showing a clear shift in the market after years of relatively slow growth for the operating system.

Windows 10 will end support on October 14. Although Microsoft has offered a year of free security updates to users who sign in, its main goal is to encourage users to switch to the new operating system, which is also leading the way on the Steam platform.

Microsoft also confirmed that the upcoming 25H2 version will not have major platform changes. This is a move to ensure compatibility as well as promote the PC upgrade cycle in 2025.

However, Windows 11 is still controversial because of its higher system requirements, which prevents a large number of Windows 10 users from upgrading, forcing them to buy new devices if they want to experience it. In addition, the requirement for a Microsoft account and an Internet connection during installation has also caused many complaints.

The issue of ads and bloatware is also a downside, although these factors were already present in Windows 10, so users who upgrade may not notice much difference. Currently, Windows 11 is a free upgrade for eligible computers. For incompatible devices, Microsoft recommends users buy new Copilot+ PC models to access exclusive AI features.
