Moving in the right direction, with clear results

Continuing to effectively implement Project No. 03-DA/TU on restructuring the agricultural sector towards increasing value and sustainable development and implementing Resolution No. 03-NQ/TU, the plan of the Town Party Committee and the Town People's Committee on developing high-tech agriculture in the period of 2021-2030, in the past time, Binh Minh Town has focused on reviewing and supplementing the planning of agricultural production, the structure of agricultural and aquatic land use towards reducing the area of ​​rice cultivation, developing the area of ​​specialized crops and fruit trees associated with shifting the structure of suitable and diverse crops and livestock, creating many products with high economic value, meeting market demand. At the same time, promoting the application of science and technology in production, gradually applying high technology, meeting VietGAP, GlobalGAP standards...

In Thuan An commune, with natural conditions, the land is suitable for growing vegetables, fruit trees, especially watercress and fish mint. In addition, to increase the value of agricultural production, in addition to changing the crop structure, the commune also focuses on developing and replicating agricultural production models applying high technology in a modern direction such as: automatic sprinkler irrigation model, using organic fertilizers, products certified by VietGAP, products achieving 4-star OCOP for watercress in Thuan Thanh hamlet to increase the added value of the products. At the same time, a new safe vegetable cooperative "Nang Xanh" was established to produce and consume watercress, initially operating effectively.

According to the People's Committee of Dong Thanh commune, the restructuring of the commune's agricultural sector has shifted in the right direction, bringing high economic efficiency. Accordingly, in the past year, the area of ​​rice land converted to growing vegetables was 6.2 hectares (620% of the plan, 520% ​​higher than the same period), bringing the total area of ​​specialized vegetable cultivation to 8.42 hectares; the estimated area of ​​​​vegetables planted is over 300 hectares. Prominent vegetable products include: bitter melon, cucumber, squash, pumpkin, chili, corn...

The area of ​​fruit trees is over 1,000 hectares, such as: Thai jackfruit, seedless lemon, pomelo, durian, grapefruit... In the past year, households renovated old, ineffective gardens on 12 hectares compared to the plan, reaching 246%, exceeding 146% over the same period.

Planting fruit trees in between, short-term benefits for long-term benefits

While watering 11 hectares of short-term crops mixed with seedless lemons, Mr. Bui Huu Toan (Dong Hoa 1 Hamlet, Dong Thanh Commune) said: “Before 2015, I grew rice but it was not effective. Then I rented out oranges but the price was unstable so the tenant returned it. I have renovated the land and planted fruit trees for nearly 2 years now. I grow corn and long beans mixed with seedless lemons to make a living in the short term. The current profit is about 20 million VND/hectare, much more profitable than growing rice.”

Also taking care of 5 hectares of land growing watermelon, chili and red-fleshed jackfruit, Mr. Le Bao Toan (Dong Thanh commune) said: “I have raised beds to grow fruit trees and intercropped them with watermelon. After several harvest seasons, the jackfruit has grown well, and the watermelon has a stable output, so my income has increased. The last Tet melon crop had a good harvest and good price, earning 70-80 million VND.”

Mr. Huynh Van Loi - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Dong Thanh commune, said: The movement of growing vegetables on ineffective rice land is developing strongly and constantly expanding the area, contributing to improving people's lives.

Accordingly, the color is easy to grow, requires less care, has fewer pests, has a shorter harvest time, capital turnover is fast and provides stable income, especially at present, the price of vegetables is increasing, so farmers have many times higher profits after harvest than growing rice. In the coming time, the commune will strengthen guidance for farmers to apply science and technology in production to improve product quality, meet market demand, guide and recommend farmers to grow many different types of vegetables, choose varieties suitable to market demand.

The agricultural sector recommends that farmers improve productivity, quality and output of crops to meet market demand.

Mr. Le Thanh Thuan - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Binh Minh Town, said: In the coming time, the agricultural sector will focus on promoting production efficiency after forming and expanding joint venture and association models in production, processing, and product consumption associated with building brands for some agricultural products with strengths to create breakthroughs in agriculture.
