The project, called REK, was founded by Cix Liv, a virtual reality (VR) entrepreneur and combat robot enthusiast.
According to Ashlee Vance on Substack Core Memory, REK is a unique robot fighting club that combines sports and performance art, inspired by mixed martial arts, wrestling, anime, and science fiction. With over a decade of experience in VR, Liv won the Ultimate Fighting Bots (UFB) robot fighting tournament in San Francisco and is developing REK into a playground where humans remotely control robots using VR headsets and combat controllers.

According to Futurism, these robots are programmed to punch, kick, slap, and even slash each other with swords, creating dramatic fights. Mr. Liv is training artificial intelligence (AI) based on videos of fighting moves to create realistic sequences of movements for the robots. He believes that REK will bring a sense of excitement to viewers and describes the shaking of the ground when the robot moves with the sword as making viewers feel like facing a lion.
Mr. Liv believes that robot fighting will be the first truly egalitarian combat sport , with men and women, young and old all competing. He also predicts that robot battles will become more and more popular in the future.
However, the project still faces many challenges. A recent video on social network X shows the robot "boyDeREK" struggling out of control because it is not touching the ground, causing the crane it is hanging from to collapse and part of the robot's head to fly off.
