Self-sufficiency in raw materials, towards Vietnamese milk brand competing globally

On August 12, in Ho Chi Minh City, the Institute for Industry and Trade Policy and Strategy (Ministry of Industry and Trade) held a workshop on "Developing Vietnam's Dairy Industry to 2030, with a vision to 2045".

In his opening speech, Mr. Truong Thanh Hoai - Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade emphasized the essential role of the dairy industry in ensuring community nutrition, contributing to improving the stature, physical strength and intelligence of Vietnamese people. This is also a strategic industry of sustainable agriculture , promoting the modern food processing industry and increasing the competitiveness of Vietnamese goods in the international market.

In the context of deep integration, the requirements for technological innovation, productivity improvement, quality and food safety are increasingly strict, the Vietnamese dairy industry is facing both breakthrough opportunities and competitive pressure.

To achieve the goal by 2030 and the vision to 2045, increase the level of self-sufficiency in domestic raw materials, and increase per capita milk consumption, Mr. Truong Thanh Hoai said that it is necessary to implement a synchronous development strategy from raw material areas, processing technology, logistics to distribution; at the same time, perfecting mechanisms and policies to attract investment, encourage innovation, and promote value chain linkage.

To build a Vietnamese milk brand following world trends,
competitiveness, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Quang Trung - Chairman of the Vietnam Dairy Association emphasized that dairy enterprises need to build farms according to sustainable agricultural models, circular economy , practice regenerative agriculture, and use green and clean energy.

Along with that, dairy businesses need to aim for farms that not only meet international standards, but also meet aspects of sustainable development, such as meeting global good agricultural practices (Global GAP), organic dairy farms, or farms certified as carbon neutral PAS 2060:2014...

In addition, businesses need to choose and invest in building farms and pastures in areas with climates similar to temperate zones (Da Lat, Moc Chau, Mang Yang...) to produce high-quality and productive fresh milk.

With the annual milk yield of over 100kg, domestic fresh milk accounting for over 60%, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Duong - Chairman of the Vietnam Livestock Association said that it is necessary to unify awareness and share responsibility among policy makers, livestock farmers and consumers.

On the other hand, it is necessary to encourage the widespread development of intensive models of grass and forage crops for dairy cow and goat farming. This is a model with high and sustainable income, solving the problem of many agricultural laborers.

In particular, it is necessary to perfect institutions and unified, transparent legal policies on quality standards and technical regulations to clearly classify dairy products, especially between fresh milk and reconstituted liquid milk; and have policies to encourage milk production and processing enterprises to use domestic fresh milk raw materials.

"Cooperatives are a completely suitable solution to help Vietnam become self-sufficient in most raw materials for the Vietnamese dairy industry," Dr. Nguyen Xuan Duong suggested.

On the business side, Mr. Nguyen Quang Tri - Vinamilk Marketing Executive Director said that in order to develop the Vietnamese dairy industry by 2030, with a vision to 2045, Vinamilk recommends that the authorities continue to improve the legal document system, simplify investment procedures, and product registration procedures to help businesses facilitate production and business activities.

In addition, the State needs to have preferential policies on tax, credit and land to support enterprises in expanding raw material areas, developing high-quality product production and increasing the localization rate. Along with that, encourage trade promotion programs, remove technical barriers, help enterprises expand markets; support research, technological innovation and training of highly qualified human resources; maintain regular dialogue between the State and enterprises, promptly resolve difficulties, create a fair competitive environment and long-term development.
