On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the successful August Revolution (August 19, 1945 - August 19, 2025) and National Day September 2, on the afternoon of August 18, the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission chaired and coordinated with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to organize a large-scale lacquer painting exhibition "Independence Spring" at the Ho Chi Minh Museum (19 Ngoc Ha, Ba Dinh, Hanoi).

Attending the exhibition were Politburo member, Party Central Committee Secretary, Head of the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission Nguyen Trong Nghia; Party Central Committee member, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission Ngo Dong Hai.
Also attending the exhibition were representatives of leaders of departments, ministries, branches, organizations; ambassadors, consulates and foreign diplomatic missions in Vietnam and art lovers.

Speaking at the opening of the exhibition, Director of the Ho Chi Minh Museum Vu Manh Ha emphasized that this is a special and meaningful artistic activity. For the first time, a large-scale lacquer painting series with 17 elaborately composed works vividly recreating historical stages, glorious victories of the nation and unique images of beloved President Ho Chi Minh by a young artist, has been introduced to a wide audience nationwide.

The exhibition includes 17 large-scale lacquer paintings by artist Chu Nhat Quang, recreating the heroic history of the nation. Through the visual language and perspective of young people, the exhibition expresses the love for the homeland and the boundless gratitude towards President Ho Chi Minh and the sacrifices of soldiers and compatriots for the independence and freedom of the nation.
With a style combining traditional lacquer materials and contemporary creative thinking, the works express unique and novel aesthetic values; demonstrate the spirit of innovation and creativity, combining traditional materials and contemporary art, bringing new aesthetic depth, while honoring the aspiration for independence, freedom and peace of the Vietnamese people.

Sharing the reason why a young artist chose to create works on the theme of revolutionary history and leaders, artist Chu Nhat Quang said: “Patriotism and respect for history have been instilled in me since childhood through family education, school and media. My grandfather painted many paintings on revolutionary themes and when I grew up, I proactively went to museums, read, watched documentaries, and met witnesses. When studying and experiencing abroad, I further understood the value of freedom and independence and wanted to contribute my intelligence and creativity to works about the country.”
According to artist Chu Nhat Quang, he has cherished works about the country's historical events since his time studying abroad in the US. Since 2019, as soon as he returned to Vietnam, he started sketching, searching and collecting materials. To have 17 works of "Independent Spring", he spent nearly 7 years of tireless and continuous artistic work.

The largest painting in the exhibition is 7.2 meters long and 2.4 meters high, with two sides. One side is titled “Uncle Ho Reading the Declaration of Independence”, recreating the scene at Ba Dinh Square on September 2, 1945. The other side is “National Spring”, with the image of the people of the whole country joyfully celebrating the day of independence and freedom.

Regarding the paintings presented at the exhibition “Independence Spring”, artist Luong Xuan Doan, Chairman of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, said that painting historical paintings is extremely difficult and challenging. Artist Chu Nhat Quang must have a great love for history and traditional art, especially lacquer, to be able to do it. This is a turning point for young people, bringing many new expectations for contemporary Vietnamese art.

Journalist Ho Quang Loi, former Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association, as an art lover, commented: “When looking at the paintings, I see the heroic spirit, love for history, and the journey to independence vividly recreated by Chu Nhat Quang in 17 lacquer paintings. These paintings express patriotism and national pride in each of us, while honoring the values of history and Vietnamese culture.”
The exhibition runs until September 10. The works are displayed outdoors.
Painter Chu Nhat Quang (born in 1995) comes from an artistic family, graduated in the US and Australia, and is a typical face of the young generation of painters attached to lacquer art.
In 2024, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital, he successfully organized the exhibition "Sacred Marks" at Thang Long Imperial Citadel, with 52 large-scale lacquer paintings on the theme of heritage and country.
This lacquer painting series “Independence Spring” demonstrates modern visual thinking, bringing a strong visual experience, while conveying patriotic, humane emotions and admiration for President Ho Chi Minh.
