Children who spend too much time sitting in front of screens, whether phones or televisions, are at increased risk of heart-related diseases and metabolic disorders, according to a study by Danish scientists published on August 6.

The study tracked the electronic device use and sleep habits of more than 1,000 adolescents aged 10-18 to analyze the association between device use and cardiometabolic risk factors.

Research published in the Journal of the American Heart Association shows that children and adolescents who spend too much time in front of screens and electronic devices are at higher risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and insulin resistance, or diabetes.

Specifically, Mr. David Horner, lead author and researcher at the University of Copenhagen, said that a child exposed to the screen for an additional 3 hours/day will have a 25-50% higher risk of getting sick than his peers.

If this were to occur across the entire pediatric population, it would result in a significant change in the risk of cardiovascular disease early in life that could persist into adulthood.

Researchers are still debating the negative effects of electronic device use on children and adolescents. However, most agree that this age group is more susceptible than adults./.
