Luton Town played with determination against Conventry.
In the second half, coach Mark Robins made some changes. Coventry's play improved. They scored an equalizer in the 66th minute through Gustavo Hamer. With the nature of a promotion match, both teams played cautiously for the rest of the match.
The two sides were tied 1-1 after two official periods, and the two sides entered extra time. In the 116th minute, Joseph Taylor scored against Coventry, but the winning goal was disallowed due to a Luton Town player's handball. The two teams were forced to decide the winner in a penalty shootout.

This result helped Luton Town gain the right to be promoted to the Premier League next season. This is the first time they have participated in the Premier League.
In addition, Luton Town also received 170 million pounds including bonuses, television copyright, stadium advertising... from the Premier League organizing committee. This amount will be paid over 3 seasons. If they stay in the league next season, the amount will increase to 290 million pounds and will be paid over 5 years.
