This is the 11th conference in the annual conference series on international economic cooperation and integration (CIECI) initiated in 2013. According to Associate Professor, Dr. Le Trung Thanh, Principal of University of Economics - VNU.
Sharing the same view, experts at the workshop also said that over the past decade, East Asia and South Asia have faced increasing levels of protectionism and anti-globalization in regional and global trade. In addition, recent uncertainties such as the COVID-19 pandemic; the US-China trade war; the Russia-Ukraine military war; inflationary pressures; GVC disruption; regional and global economic recession will lead to more inward-looking policies, increased protectionism and fragmentation in trade agreements. These challenges lead to the need for new trade mechanisms and policy coherence at the global, regional and national levels.
On the other hand, deep participation in international trade and GVCs brings comprehensive recovery to countries, creating stable and sustainable development in the process of green and digital transformation. However, in recent times, some GVCs are becoming more and more complex. Therefore, CIECI 2023 speakers not only focus on the practice of participating in GVCs but also point out the challenges and risks arising in this process, providing policy implications for governments and corporate governance strategies to ensure recovery and sustainability when participating in GVCs.
Speakers participate in the roundtable discussion
At parallel sessions of the workshop held in the afternoon of the same day, experts brought assessments on 5 contents: Digital transformation and innovation in GVCs; Sustainable practices in GVCs; Issues of resilience and governance in GVCs; Models, characteristics and policies of GVCs and Servitization and enterprise-level analysis in East Asia.
