As someone who has participated in editing many books by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in recent years, MSc. Pham Thi Thinh, Deputy Director, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the National Political Publishing House, Truth, shared about this publication: “It must be said that this is the first book by the General Secretary on Vietnam's military and defense strategy in the new period. As a publisher, we see that, through this publication, although General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is not a professional military man, the General Secretary's instructions are very sharp, demonstrating a breakthrough in his theoretical thinking on military and defense. The General Secretary's instructions are very detailed, specific, thorough and profound, showing "the erudition, the extensive knowledge" as well as "the strategic thinking" and high responsibility of the leader of our Party".

With more than 400 pages, the book is divided into 3 parts. The first part includes 21 articles, speeches, and interviews by the General Secretary on military guidelines, defense strategies, and directions for building the army in the new context. The second part includes 19 articles, speeches, and speeches by the comrade to agencies, units, military branches, military services, academies, and schools. The last part is a special article, depicting the portrait of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Secretary of the Central Military Commission, from the perspective of Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, former member of the Party Central Committee, former Deputy Minister of National Defense. The publication was built over a period of more than 5 consecutive months, with the author's dedication, along with the efforts of the editorial team.

Having the honor of working directly with the General Secretary many times during the process of making the book, Ms. Bui Thi Anh Hong, Head of the Textbook - Reference Department, National Political Publishing House, Truth, said: “The issue of military and national defense is a very big problem. As people who are not experts in this field, at first, it was quite difficult for us to access, read and understand the content of the manuscript. In addition, the articles, speeches and speeches of the General Secretary were found in a long chronological order, in many different contexts and times. It was necessary to edit and arrange them in a way that still ensured consistency, continuity and brought out the theme and ideas of the book, which was also a big challenge. Being aware of our responsibility, right from the beginning of building the manuscript, we built a very clear plan. We were also very fortunate to have been able to ask for direct opinions and work many times with the author, so we grasped the ideas and understood the spirit of the book”.

Through the book, we can summarize the General Secretary's consistent and consistent thinking on the military and defense fields in two aspects: One is on the issue of military and defense guidelines and strategies; the other is on building a new-style army. In each aspect, the General Secretary affirms the Party's direct and absolute leadership in all aspects over the army. In which, guidelines and strategies are comprehensive and decisive; building forces is fundamental and foundational. These two aspects have a close and intimate relationship with each other, complementing each other, contributing to clarifying the development in the Party's theoretical thinking on leadership and the capacity to plan defense and security guidelines and policies, leaving behind great theoretical and practical values.

Having accessed the book quite early, Major General, Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Cuong Quyet, Director of the Institute of National Defense Strategy, said that the General Secretary's instructions and orientations are most concentrated in 13 questions for Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, which the Senior Lieutenant General recounted in part three of the book. With only 41 pages of part three, readers can imagine a General Secretary, Secretary of the Central Military Commission Nguyen Phu Trong, a person with dialectical thinking and strategic vision in building military guidelines; defense strategy, military strategy, protecting the socialist Vietnamese Fatherland.

According to Major General, Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Cuong Quyet, the core point, the breakthrough in the thinking of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in the military policy and national defense strategy: "That is the idea that "Protecting the independence and autonomy of the country must be associated with protecting peace". Protecting peace is a sacred value of the task of protecting the Fatherland. This is a creative and unique military and defense theory, "taking protecting a peaceful environment as a consistent goal in building the overall strength of national defense and military".

Based on the strategic orientation on defending the Fatherland in the new situation, inheriting traditional values, and drawing from rich and vivid practical experience, with sharp theoretical thinking and high responsibility, close, drastic and comprehensive direction, the book has great ideological orientation value, raising awareness, creating consensus in society to implement the Party and State's policies and viewpoints on the task of strengthening national defense strength, determined to firmly defend the socialist Vietnamese Fatherland in the new situation.
