Colorful Chol-chnam-thmay festival

Việt NamViệt Nam14/04/2025

Khmer people in all villages and hamlets in the province are entering the Chol-chnam-thmay festival of 2025 filled with joy, with many colorful rituals and activities. Like the Lunar New Year of the Kinh people - the traditional New Year of the Khmer people contains many customs that express the unique culture of the Khmer community in their homeland of Bac Lieu.

These days, people in areas with a large Khmer population are jubilantly celebrating. In harmony with the colors of Chol-chnam-thmay, Khmer pagodas are splendidly decorated to welcome Buddhists and ethnic groups to join in the fun (photo 1 ). In keeping with traditional customs, many families have made their own special cakes to preserve their family traditions and offer them to their ancestors' altars (photo 2).

During Tet, Khmer people from young to old dress up in beautiful clothes to go to the pagoda to worship Buddha. Each family brings rice, cakes and fruits to offer to the monks and participate in chanting and preaching to thank those who made the food and pray for the deceased (photo 3). Looking forward to a beautiful new year, the sand mountain building ceremony and Buddha bathing ceremony show the Buddhists' respect for Buddha and the Gods with the hope of blessing the village with peace and the people's lives with prosperity and happiness (photos 4 and 5) .

Along with the solemn ceremony, the traditional Chol-chnam-thmay New Year also has a bustling festival with art programs, cultural activities, folk games... creating an exciting atmosphere among the Khmer people (photo 6) .
