If students wish to enroll in a literature course, the government will provide financial support. However, in reality, very few students enroll and foreign languages become a huge barrier.
On November 28, in Hanoi, the Department of Performing Arts (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) held a workshop on "Improving young literary creation".
At the workshop, writers, poets and experts focused on discussing a number of issues such as an overview of current youth literary creation activities; strengths and limitations of youth literary creation activities; literary development through competitions, literary awards, writing camps; policies to support and train young writers, etc.
According to poet Tran Huu Viet, Head of the Young Writers Committee (Vietnam Writers Association), young members of the Vietnam Writers Association are under 35 years old but they possess an impressive "fortune". Besides traditional writing styles, many young writers have researched, experimented, and caught up with many new creative trends in the world today such as non-fiction literature, fantasy novels or magical realism... Some have returned to detective and horror novels, creating a rich literary picture. A notable phenomenon is that recently, many young authors have focused on historical themes, explaining history from a contemporary perspective.
However, to improve the quality of young literary works, poet Tran Huu Viet believes that, first of all, it is necessary to pay attention to the issue of human resource training; next, it is necessary to organize literary competitions with prestigious and valuable prizes to encourage and motivate young people to continue on the path of literature. Along with that, the State must have policies to support young writers in publishing their works, possibly through ordering...
Sharing the same concern, many experts pointed out that in reality, there are young writers who have the desire to become writers and poets. However, not everyone can find the right direction for themselves, and position their names in the literary life. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention and invest properly, with focus and key points to create a talented and responsible young creative force, contributing to the cause of protecting and developing national culture.
According to writer Trinh Thi Bich Ngan, President of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association, social life is placing many harsh demands on the material needs of each individual and each family. Most young authors still have to struggle with making a living. Literature is not considered a profession to devote all one's life and death to writing, so many plans, many ambitions, many ideas are still shaky and falling apart.
Many young writers have also stopped on the arduous journey of writing because they are not passionate enough and not lonely enough to devote all their energy to literature. The Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association proposed to improve the quality of young literary creations through awards to encourage literary startups among university students, and to arouse the passion for literature in the young generation. She stated that the State urgently needs to have an investment strategy to promote literature to the world...
Concluding the workshop, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong emphasized that Vietnamese literature is having a strong vitality because today's young generations are following in the footsteps of their predecessors. Literature is a particularly important foundation to help Vietnamese literature and art develop strongly. Many good films, famous plays, songs... are based on literary materials. Without literature, art will completely lose its "land" to develop.
Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong commented that Vietnamese literature is currently facing the problem of a lack of young writers, partly due to the young generation not yet defining what value writing will bring. Today's youth must understand that literature is one of the foundations for social development. Literary creation is very helpful for many fields. A graduate in this field can write scripts, criticize literature, work as a translator, reporter, etc. In fact, these are all fields that are "thirsty" for human resources.
Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong also said that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is implementing a project to train and develop human resources for culture and arts abroad until 2030. The project includes the fields of literary theory and composition. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism also creates special conditions for young people to register for training in the field of literature. The most prestigious universities in the world are qualified to recognize degrees and if students wish, the State will support their tuition fees. But in reality, very few students register and if they do, foreign languages become a huge barrier.
In the coming time, Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong hopes that young writers will continuously learn skills; enthusiastically create, and produce works with deep ideological, cultural, and historical values. The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism is always ready to organize writing camps for young writers to learn, create, and promote their literary works. The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism is also making efforts to draft a Decree on literary activities, creating momentum for the development of Vietnamese literature, especially young literature.
