Ca Mau Airport planning to receive A320/321 aircraft

Ca Mau Airport currently has a runway measuring 1,500mx30m, which can only operate short flights using ATR72 aircraft or equivalent.

The Minister of Transport has just signed Decision No. 791/QD-BGTVT approving the Ca Mau Airport Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.

Accordingly, Ca Mau Airport has a position and function in the national airport network as a domestic airport; its nature of use is that of a shared civil and military airport.

According to the approved plan, in the period 2021-2030, Ca Mau Airport will be a 4C airport (according to the standard code of the International Civil Aviation Organization - ICAO) and a level II military airport; capacity of about 1 million passengers/year and 1,000 tons of cargo/year; type of aircraft operated is code C such as A320/A321 and equivalent. Approach and landing method is CAT I with head 27 and simple head 09.

Vision to 2050, Ca Mau Airport will maintain the level of 4C airport and level II military airport but the capacity will be increased to about 3 million passengers/year and 3,000 tons of cargo/year; the type of aircraft operated will be code C such as A320/A321 and equivalent; the landing approach will be CAT I with head 27 and simple head 09.

Regarding the runway system, in the period of 2021-2030, Ca Mau Airport is planned to have a runway measuring 2,400 m x 45 m, coinciding with the existing runway and shifting the threshold 09 about 1,100 m to the East, with the material curb size according to regulations. The vision to 2050 maintains the runway configuration planned for the period of 2021-2030.

Regarding the passenger terminal, in the period 2021-2030, Ca Mau Airport will expand the existing passenger terminal to meet the capacity of about 1 million passengers/year. Vision to 2050, implementing the planning of a new passenger terminal in the area north of the runway, with a capacity of about 3 million passengers/year; reserve land for development when needed.

In addition, in the period 2021-2030, the Ministry of Transport plans a cargo warehouse to the west of the passenger terminal, near the existing aircraft parking lot, with a capacity of about 1,000 tons of cargo/year; with a vision to 2050, a cargo warehouse to the east of the new passenger terminal will be planned, with a capacity of about 3,000 tons of cargo/year.

In the period of 2021-2030, the total land use demand of Ca Mau Airport is about 184.22 hectares, of which the common land area managed by civil use is 130 hectares; the aviation land area managed by civil use is 21.22 hectares; the land area managed by military use is 33 hectares. Vision to 2050, the total land use demand of Ca Mau Airport is about 244.43 hectares, of which the common land area managed by civil use is 143.46 hectares; the aviation land area managed by civil use is 67.97 hectares; the land area managed by military use is 33 hectares.

The Ministry of Transport assigned the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam to coordinate with the People's Committee of Ca Mau province and relevant agencies to organize the announcement, management and implementation of the planning.

Ca Mau Provincial People's Committee updates the content of the Planning into local planning; arranges and protects land funds in accordance with the approved Planning, has plans for planning and land use plans to ensure that land funds are ready to meet the needs of expansion development according to the planning.

Previously, Vietnam Airports Corporation - ACV and the People's Committee of Ca Mau province agreed to upgrade and expand Ca Mau Airport to ensure it can receive medium-range commercial aircraft such as A321/320/310 or Embraer 195, which is necessary.

Specifically, in the period up to 2030, Ca Mau Airport will invest in building a new runway measuring 2400mx45m to the North and 180m from the existing runway; building a new taxiway connecting the existing apron and the new runway in the North; expanding the aircraft apron to accommodate 4 parking positions for medium-range and narrow-body aircraft; upgrading the existing passenger terminal to accommodate up to 1,000,000 passengers/year. The investment cost for this phase is estimated at VND 2,253 billion (excluding site clearance costs).

By 2050, Ca Mau Airport will continue to renovate the 2,400mx45m runway (to be built in 2030) into a parallel taxiway; build a new 2,400mx45m runway in the South and 180m from the parallel taxiway; build connecting taxiways; and build a new civil aviation area in the North.

ACV calculates that the construction plan to expand Ca Mau Airport until 2030 will take about 38 months, of which the preparation and submission for approval of the detailed planning adjustment of Ca Mau Airport, and the preparation of the Pre-Feasibility Study Report and submission for approval of the investment policy will take about 6 months; the implementation time is 32 months from the date of approval of the investment policy.

Ca Mau Airport is currently a level 4C airport, with a 2-level passenger terminal with a capacity of 200,000 passengers/year, a runway measuring 1,500mx30m, ensuring the operation of ATR72 aircraft or equivalent. Currently, Ca Mau Airport is being operated by VASCO with only one route, Ca Mau - Ho Chi Minh City and vice versa, with a frequency of 4 flights/week using ATR72 aircraft.
