Women in difficult circumstances rise up to become good at economics

Before 2014, due to difficult family circumstances, Ms. Hoa worked as a hired hand tapping rubber trees and planting forests to make ends meet. During her time working for hire, she realized that in Vinh Linh district, the demand for industrial and forestry tree varieties for forest planting was increasing, so she decided to borrow 200 million VND to invest in building a nursery of nearly 1,000 ^m2 .

At first, because she had not yet mastered the production techniques, she worked and studied at the same time, taking charge of all stages to reduce labor costs. With diligence and perseverance, Ms. Hoa gradually stabilized the nursery's operations, producing a quantity of seedlings to meet market demand.

Sharing her experience in building a nursery, Ms. Hoa said: “I find that working in a nursery requires a lot of experience. From choosing a source of guaranteed, high-yielding seedlings, to strict management, regular monitoring, and garden care to promptly prevent pests and diseases, and limit the spread because the seedlings are in the early stages of growth.

Taking care of standard seedlings also requires skills, especially forming a root system to ensure the tree is safe before selling, so that after planting, the survival rate of the tree is over 90%, then customers will confidently buy the seedlings.

Thanks to her reputation in production and business, the number of customers buying seedlings at Ms. Hoa's nursery is increasing, and from the profits earned, she has paid off the initial loan. By 2019, her family continued to invest an additional 1 billion VND to expand 2 nursery facilities with a total area of over 4,000 m2. Currently, Ms. Hoa's family nursery provides seedlings for the entire Vinh Linh district and some neighboring localities.

Calculating revenue and profit, Ms. Hoa said: "On average, each year the nursery sells 500,000 - 600,000 seedlings, the selling price fluctuates around 1,000 - 1,200 VND/tree according to the market. After deducting expenses, the family's profit is about 500 - 600 million VND/year."

Ms. Hoa’s family’s tree nursery model has been learned by many households in Ben Quan town. Having risen from difficulties, Ms. Hoa is willing to share her experience in production with the hope that the model will be replicated.

Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Ben Quan town, Ly Thi Nga, said: "Currently, in Ben Quan town, in addition to Ms. Hoa's family model, there are nearly 10 other effective nurseries. This contributes to promoting the potential and advantages of hilly land, creating jobs, increasing income for workers and providing quality forestry and industrial tree seedlings to the market."

Stories about women who dare to think, dare to do, and are determined to start a successful business with a suitable economic model have been spreading, promoting the movement of actively studying, working, and doing good business among women's union members in all localities in Vinh Linh district.
