Accordingly, high-intensity interval training combined with a calorie-restricted diet can help reverse liver damage, according to medical website Medical Express.
New research has discovered a surprising effect of exercise on the liver.
Scientists from the University of Missouri School of Medicine (USA) conducted a study on 24 patients with fatty liver disease. Participants were divided into two groups: a "treatment group" that followed a restricted diet and high-intensity interval training three times a week for 10 months, and a "control group" that followed a standard treatment regimen.
The authors examined the effects of exercise and diet on liver health and confirmed liver recovery through imaging and diagnostic biopsies. These techniques allow for the measurement of liver inflammation, fat accumulation, cirrhosis development, and other indicators of liver health.
The results showed that the treatment group had significantly improved liver health, reduced liver damage and signs of liver recovery compared to the control group, according to Medical Express.
They also lost weight, lost fat, and increased muscle mass compared to the control group.
“Obesity and diabetes are on the rise and are two major risk factors for fatty liver disease,” said lead author Dr Elizabeth Parks, of the University of Missouri School of Medicine. “The results suggest that diet and exercise can be used to treat these conditions and reverse liver damage. It may even protect against the development of steatohepatitis in the future.”
Although more research is needed, the breakthrough offers hope, Dr. Parks said.
High-intensity interval training combined with a calorie-restricted diet may help reverse liver damage
High-intensity interval training (HIIT). This workout involves short bursts of high-intensity exercise that get your heart rate up, interspersed with low-intensity recovery periods.
Typically, a HIIT workout will last between 10 and 30 minutes, according to medical news site WebMD .
Workouts can include sprinting, cycling, jumping rope, etc. For example, a HIIT workout using a stationary bike might include 30 seconds of cycling as fast as you can, followed by a few minutes of slow, comfortable cycling. That's one HIIT session, and one workout typically consists of 4-6 repetitions.
Calorie-restricted diet. A calorie-restricted diet is one that reduces your calorie intake without depriving you of vitamins and minerals. Depending on how strict it is, it can reduce your calorie intake by more than one-third of your normal level, according to WebMD .
It is important to consult your doctor before starting a new exercise or diet regimen.
