Americans believe AI will threaten the future of humanity

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên22/05/2023

OpenAI's ChatGPT has started a race to develop artificial intelligence (AI) technology, with the participation of technology "giants" such as Google and Microsoft. Therefore, the widespread integration of AI into daily life has attracted the attention and concern of many people.

Lawmakers and AI companies are also concerned about the potential risks of this technology. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed his concerns about the potential misuse of AI technology at a hearing before the US Congress on May 16. He proposed the establishment of an oversight agency and the promulgation of regulations to control this technology.

The ChatGPT "fever" has raised concerns about the negative impact of AI

According to data from Reuters, 61% of respondents believe that AI will pose a risk to humanity, while only 22% disagree and 17% are unsure.

Landon Klein, US policy director at the Future of Life Institute (FLI) - the organization behind the open letter calling for a six-month pause in AI development - said many Americans are worried about the negative impacts of AI.

Others, however, argue that the public should learn more about the benefits of AI. Sebastian Thrun, founder of Google X, said the concerns were legitimate, but he believed AI would improve people's lives and help them work more efficiently.

Ion Stoica, co-founder of AI company Anyscale, said that besides ChatGPT, AI has other positive applications such as discovering and developing new drugs. He said Americans may not realize how prevalent AI is in their daily lives, both at home and at work.
