According to Bloomberg , OpenAI recently allowed users to shop for products right within ChatGPT, the latest move to expand the reach of the popular chatbot and challenge rivals like Google.
With the newly announced option, users can quickly compare products and click a link within ChatGPT to make a purchase on an external website. Initially, the feature will only work for a limited number of categories, including electronics, fashion, beauty, and home goods, with plans to expand to more categories over time.
This shopping tool is available to all 500 million ChatGPT users and doesn't even require logging into the chatbot to use it.
When this feature is active, users don’t need to switch to other websites. They can search for items, read product details, and complete the purchase. Everything happens within the chat window.
Shopify’s large network of merchants will also be part of the system, bringing richness and diversity in products while opening the door for businesses to reach users through ChatGPT.
The shopping feature also puts ChatGPT in direct competition with other online product recommendation and review sites like CNET and the New York Times’ Wirecutter. An OpenAI spokesperson said the company will not collect affiliate revenue for transactions made through ChatGPT.
Search is one of ChatGPT's most popular and fastest-growing features. According to OpenAI, more than 1 billion web searches have been performed using the chatbot.
