Manchester United are set for a major overhaul of their squad ahead of the 2025/26 season. However, veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton is likely to remain at Old Trafford for at least another season.

At 39, and with just three first-team appearances since returning to United in 2021, Heaton looked set to leave at the end of the season. However, according to the Daily Mail , the Red Devils are in talks to keep him as their third-choice goalkeeper.

Heaton has not featured in any competitive matches for the first team this season, his only appearance coming with the Under-21s in a 3-2 win over Barnsley. However, United’s decision to retain him makes strategic sense.

The futures of both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir are in doubt. Onana has been plagued by errors since joining from Inter Milan, while Bayindir was disappointing in his rare start against Newcastle. It is clear that the United coaching staff are concerned about depth in goal.

In that context, keeping an experienced goalkeeper who knows the Old Trafford environment and accepts a reserve role like Heaton is a reasonable choice. Heaton will be a reliable goalkeeper both on the pitch and in the dressing room.

Heaton came through the MU youth academy. He was promoted to the first team in 2005 but could not find a place at Old Trafford. After leaving MU and playing for 7 different clubs, Heaton returned to play for the "Red Devils" in 2021.

At Euro 2004, Heaton was also called up to the England squad, playing an important role on the training pitch, supporting Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson.
