Improving capacity to respond to trade defense cases

The workshop “Promoting export potential and enhancing capacity to respond to trade defense cases in Asian, African and Oceanian markets” was organized by the Department of Trade Defense, Ministry of Industry and Trade . The workshop aimed to raise awareness among the business community and stakeholders about responding to trade defense measures in this important market group.

According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, in the first 6 months of 2024, import-export turnover between Vietnam and the Asia-Africa region reached 246.4 billion USD, up 15.6% over the same period in 2023, accounting for 66.6% of Vietnam's total import-export turnover with the world . Of which, Vietnam's exports to the Asia region reached 88.7 billion USD, up 11% over the same period in 2023; the Oceania and Africa regions contributed nearly 3.5 billion USD and 1.5 billion USD, up 27.1% and 5.9% over the same period in 2023.

To effectively protect domestic production, countries and territories in Asia, Africa and Oceania also regularly investigate and apply trade defense measures when exported goods create competitive pressure with domestically produced goods.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, by the end of October 2024, the number of trade defense cases from these markets accounted for 146/267 cases against our exports. The investigated items are relatively diverse, such as construction materials, wood products, chemicals, agriculture, forestry and fishery products. The practice of trade defense investigations also shows many unique features, closely linked to the characteristics of each country and territory.
