On the morning of April 3 (Vietnam time), Inter Miami faced a difficult challenge at LAFC's home field in the first leg of the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup 2024.
Despite the presence of superstar Lionel Messi, Inter Miami from MLS still suffered a 0-1 defeat against the home team, a team that played with discipline and courage.
Right from the opening whistle, the match was pushed up to a fast pace but lacked sharp attacks. However, the determination of both teams still created fierce disputes in the midfield area.
Messi and teammates face difficulties against LAFC
In the 22nd minute, a controversial incident occurred when LAFC's Ordaz made a dirty move on Inter Miami's center back Allen. VAR intervened, but only a yellow card was shown to the LAFC striker, causing frustration among the away team's players.
In the 37th minute, Messi had a chance to open the scoring from a free kick - a situation that is usually his forte. However, the Argentine superstar's shot lacked the necessary sharpness and could not defeat veteran goalkeeper Hugo Lloris of LAFC, causing the first half to end without any goals scored.
In the second half, LAFC increased the pressure and had a dangerous counterattack in the 48th minute, forcing goalkeeper Ustari to rush out of the penalty area to clear the danger.
However, the real turning point came in the 57th minute when Ordaz fired a shot from outside the box. Although not powerful, goalkeeper Ustari made a mistake in positioning, allowing LAFC to take a 1-0 lead in an unfortunate move.
Veteran striker Suarez could not help Miami's attack score a goal.
LAFC almost had a second goal in the 64th minute when Tillman fired a shot from inside the box, but fortunately for Inter Miami, center-back Allen was able to get back to save the shot on the goal line. LAFC continued to press, and Tillman had another chance in the 76th minute, but his shot lacked power and went wide.
At the end of the match, LAFC won 1-0, creating a significant advantage before the second leg at Inter Miami's home field. To be able to turn the situation around and win a ticket to the semi-finals, coach Gerardo Martino and his team will have to make a lot more effort in the upcoming match.
Inter Miami and LAFC will play again on March 10, before that, Messi and his teammates will host Toronto in the MLS on March 7.
