In particular, the Ministry of Education and Training noted the need to effectively organize consultation and guidance for students to register for the selection of elective subjects and elective study topics, ensuring publicity, transparency, correct procedures, and balance between subjects to maximize the exploitation of the school's teaching staff according to the guidance of the Ministry of Education and Training. Increase the arrangement of separate classes according to each elective subject and elective study topic, be flexible in arranging the number of students in the class to best meet the needs and wishes of students; ensure the assignment of teachers, and the construction of timetables between classes that are scientific , reasonable, and do not put pressure on students and teachers.
In fact, after 4 years of implementing the new general education program at high school level, the differentiation of teaching, reduction of compulsory subjects, and increase of elective subjects shows that the conditions and methods of implementation still have many shortcomings. Many schools choose the easiest way to do it, which is to design elective subjects based on the existing classrooms and teaching staff to make it easiest to schedule.
The record also shows that, due to the conditions of facilities and teaching staff, the number of combinations in each high school in Hanoi is still limited, mainly divided into 2 groups: Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. In theory, there are more than 100 options for choosing subjects in high school, but in reality, most schools will build less than 10 combinations, mainly 4-6 subject combinations for students to choose from.
Right after students were admitted to grade 10 of high school in the 2025-2026 school year, the mandatory registration of subject combinations also made many parents and students in Hanoi confused.
According to Ms. Mai Hien, Cau Giay Ward - Hanoi, last July, when completing the admission procedures for grade 10 for the 2025-2026 school year for her child, she and her family had not yet clearly determined whether her child's abilities and interests were suitable for the natural or social combination. When the school and teachers consulted and asked her which university she wanted to apply to in the future, what career she wanted to pursue, the whole family was confused. She said that as soon as a student enters grade 10, it is difficult to say which major and which university she wants to apply to. After many phone calls with friends, colleagues, and even her child's secondary school teachers, Ms. Mai Hien decided to choose the combination of subjects Geography and Economic and Legal Education. Although they have registered and the new school year is approaching, Ms. Hien and many other parents who have chosen the same subject for their children are still very worried and uncertain whether their children can follow this combination until the end of 3 years of high school. Will they have to change the combination in the middle?
Regarding this issue, experts believe that, with the orientation at high school level, although teaching elective courses in the context of a shortage of teachers and classrooms, if schools do it wholeheartedly, they can still help increase the right to choose subjects for their students. But if schools only arrange classes to facilitate the organization, the difficulties and disadvantages will belong to the students.
