Don't be subjective with thyroid cancer

Thyroid cancer is one of the malignant diseases, the disease can progress and metastasize dangerously leading to a high risk of death, if not detected and treated promptly. However, science has proven that the 5-year survival rate of patients with thyroid cancer if detected early and treated promptly will be up to 92%.

Thyroid cancer occurs only in the cells of the thyroid gland located below the neck. The cause of the condition leading to cancer is due to a disorder in the function of producing hormones to regulate the heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and even weight. According to oncologists, usually not all thyroid tumors need surgery, even for many years the tumor just lies dormant, not growing more than when it was first formed.

Ms. HTP, 44 years old, residing in Hamlet 4, Ward 5, Ca Mau City, has late stage metastatic thyroid cancer and is being examined, cared for, and given palliative treatment at home by staff from Ward 5 Health Station.

However, if not well controlled, the thyroid tumor can completely grow larger over time. At this time, complications of the tumor will cause compression, difficulty swallowing for the patient, and even more dangerously, it can cause choking in the neck area. In addition, it also causes many other endocrine disorders such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, forcing the patient to take the hormone Levothyroxine for life, making the patient even more tired when having to deal with the disease.

Therefore, patients should proactively screen before it is too late. First of all, they need to be assessed early by a specialist to see how the risks affect the tumor (low or high), causing the tumor to grow and have complications? The next task is to be properly cared for such as: What foods should the patient eat; how to rest properly and the treatment method according to the protocol specifically for each different patient case. That is the way to control the tumor from growing unwanted.

Ms. HNX (69 years old), residing in Hamlet 6, Ward 5, Ca Mau City, is being treated for breast cancer and has recently discovered a malignant thyroid tumor at Can Tho Oncology Hospital. In addition to her hospital stay, she is regularly examined and provided health advice at home by staff from Ward 5 Health Station.

According to Dr. Tran Hien Khoa, Director of the Center for Disease Control of Ca Mau province: “Currently, science has not yet determined the exact cause of thyroid cancer. However, there are some connections indicating that these may be factors that increase the risk of developing this disease such as: Genetic factors; gender (women have a rate of malignant thyroid tumors 2 to 4 times higher than men); having thyroid disease; people who are often exposed to radioactive substances and even environmental factors…”.

Normally, thyroid tumors can be observed with the naked eye (the size of the tumor), when touched, it will also be found to have a very clear hardness and especially the tumor always moves with the patient's swallowing rhythm. In addition, abnormal neck lymph nodes can also appear and be located on the same side as the tumor. Most cases of thyroid cancer have a good prognosis, the survival rate of over 5 years (if detected at an early stage) is often over 90% of cases.

However, it also depends on other objective factors such as: The stage of disease development, the patient's age, health status, type of histopathology, method and time of treatment, including the patient's ability to respond to treatment methods according to the regimen... In fact, among endocrine cancers, thyroid cancer is the disease that most people encounter today. The reason is that when thyroid cells have abnormal growth. If it is in the late stage, thyroid cancer can metastasize to the brain, bones, lungs...

Ms. TTQ, 62 years old, residing in Hamlet 4, Ward 9, has stage 3 cancer and is being visited and encouraged by hamlet officials.

Dr. Chau Tan Dat, Head of the Oncology Department of Ca Mau General Hospital, advised: “Although it is said that thyroid cancer has a lower mortality rate than some other cancers. But that is when it is detected early, on the contrary, the danger will also increase and make the treatment process more difficult when the disease is detected at a later stage and is progressing severely. Therefore, when seeing abnormal signs in the body, patients should proactively go to specialized medical units for examination, to be diagnosed and have timely and appropriate treatment methods if it is cancer.”
