Mr. Hoang Ngoc Tien in Hoi Yen village, Hai Binh commune, Hai Lang district said that this winter-spring crop, his family planted 1.5 hectares of rice, mainly HN6 and Khang Dan varieties, of which about 3.5 hectares of rice were knocked down due to heavy rain and strong winds on the evening of April 12. To help the rice plants recover and limit yield losses, continuously from the morning of April 13 until now, taking advantage of the good weather, he has focused on pumping water out of the fields so that the rice plants can recover on their own in areas that have been lightly knocked down and re-erecting the fallen rice plants.
According to Mr. Tien, fortunately, the rice plants have only been blooming for 3-4 days and have not yet set in, so if the weather continues to be warm and sunny like now, the rice plants will still be able to stand up on their own. However, because the upper layer presses on the lower layer, the expected harvest yield is likely to be lower than the previous crop. “Fortunately, this winter-spring crop has had many rainy and cloudy days, so the rice plants bloomed later than in previous years, otherwise the damage would have been even higher. It is estimated that there is still about a month left until harvest. If it does not rain, our farmers will have a more favorable harvest,” said Mr. Tien.
According to Vice Chairman of Hai Binh Commune People's Committee Vo Viet Dinh, out of a total of 786 hectares of rice in the commune, about 170 hectares were knocked down due to heavy rain and strong winds. The most severely affected area was Co Luy village. Mr. Dinh said that after the rain, thanks to good sunshine and light winds, most of the lightly knocked down rice fields have basically recovered. For the areas that were knocked down, the locality has instructed farmers to drain water from the fields and re-establish the fallen rice plants to limit damage.
Similarly, in Hai Duong commune, out of a total of more than 900 hectares of rice in the whole commune, about 157 hectares of rice were damaged due to heavy rain and strong winds. Chairman of Hai Duong Commune People's Committee Hoang Canh informed that to limit damage, the Commune People's Committee has directed cooperatives to increase pumps to quickly drain water in the fields. Combined with the warm and sunny weather, the damaged rice areas are now basically recovering.
According to Mr. Canh, the forecast for the coming time is the season change, there is a risk of many extreme weather phenomena, especially thunderstorms, tornadoes... causing rice to fall during the flowering to ripening stage, especially in fields with high sowing density, excess nitrogen fertilization, and frequent water retention in the fields. The Commune People's Committee has directed cooperatives to mobilize forces to clear the flow of canals, check and raise the banks, and ensure quick drainage for areas at risk of flooding. At the same time, increase field visits to detect pests early and prevent them promptly.
Talking to reporters of Quang Tri Newspaper while inspecting the situation of the winter-spring rice crop that had fallen, Vice Chairman of Hai Lang District People's Committee Duong Viet Hai said that heavy rain and strong winds on the evening of April 12 caused more than 710 hectares out of nearly 6,900 hectares of rice in the district to fall.
However, because these fallen rice fields are only in the flowering stage, not yet fully established, the rice flowers are still light, after the water is drained from the fields, combined with the warm and sunny weather, most of them can recover on their own. Hai Lang district has also directed specialized agencies and localities to closely monitor the production situation and natural disasters and pests on crops. Strengthen field inspection, promptly detect and guide farmers on measures to care for, respond to natural disasters and prevent pests and diseases that harm rice plants.
“If the weather continues to be warm and sunny, it is expected that after about 3-5 days, these fallen rice fields will be able to rebuild themselves. Only a few areas have collapsed, the district is directing localities to guide farmers to take advantage of the opportunity to force the rice plants to rebuild to limit damage and facilitate future harvests,” Mr. Hai added.
According to the Head of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection Bui Phuoc Trang, through preliminary statistics, it is estimated that about 1,100 hectares of rice have fallen over, mainly in Hai Lang and Trieu Phong districts...; on rice varieties with weak stems such as Khang Dan and HN6; densely sown fields with excess nitrogen fertilization. To minimize damage to farmers, the unit has increased technical staff to closely follow the grassroots to guide farmers on measures to respond to and overcome natural disasters and prevent harmful pests and diseases in accordance with the actual situation in the locality. Also according to Mr. Trang, this year's spring crop in the whole province has planted more than 26,200 hectares of rice.
Currently, the rice plants are in the stage of heading and flowering. However, in the coming time, it is likely that there will be extreme weather events such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, strong winds... which can cause the rice to fall from the flowering and ripening stages.
At the same time, this is also a favorable time for many rice pests to continue to arise and cause widespread damage, especially rice blast, brown planthoppers, white-backed planthoppers, leaf rollers, brown leaf blight, bacterial stripe spots, grain rot, etc., which could affect productivity and harvest output. Therefore, localities need to step up propaganda and warnings about extreme weather conditions and pests that damage rice from now until the end of the season so that farmers know and proactively implement response and prevention solutions.
In addition, it is necessary to check and repair dikes and embankments to prevent heavy rains causing flooding; if a tornado causes rice to fall, it is necessary to mobilize means to quickly drain and promptly harvest rice areas that are over 85% ripe.
For rice fields that are in the flowering and green stage, after draining the water in the field, it is necessary to plant the rice by gathering 3-5 rice stalks together with nylon thread, to create favorable conditions for the rice to flower, become firm and ripen.
For rice in the stage of preparing to bloom, it is necessary to drain water quickly and prop up the rice if it falls over. After the weather clears up, spray additional super potassium foliar fertilizer to help the rice plant recover quickly and promote blooming.
