Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Duong Duc Tuan has just reported on the planning of Hanoi's urban railway system (metro).
Specifically, according to the capital's transport planning until 2035, the metro system has 10 lines with a total length of about 410km.
Recently, Hanoi has adjusted the master plan of the capital with a vision to 2065, adding 5 more metro lines with a total length of 200km. Thus, Hanoi will have 15 metro lines with a total length of 610km.
The leader of the Hanoi People's Committee said that the metro system is an extremely important form of public passenger transport for the capital as well as Ho Chi Minh City. Metro is the backbone of the urban transport infrastructure system, especially for special urban areas like Hanoi.
Despite many difficulties and challenges during the construction process, Hanoi has now put the Cat Linh – Ha Dong metro line and the elevated section of the Nhon – Hanoi station metro line into commercial operation. “This is a memorable milestone for Hanoi, which has been welcomed and highly appreciated by the people,” said Mr. Duong Duc Tuan.
The Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee said that recently, the city has actively coordinated with the Ministry of Transport and related units to implement Conclusion 49 of the Politburo. Accordingly, before 2035, Hanoi will complete the construction of more than 10 metro lines.
The time to complete more than 10 metro lines is only more than 10 years. "If we do it like the old metro lines, this will be a huge challenge in terms of resources, capital, and implementation mechanisms," said the Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee.
Regarding specific goals, Mr. Duong Duc Tuan said that Hanoi strives to complete 10 metro lines with a length of 410km by 2035. Of which, in the 2024-2030 period, 96.8km will be built, with a total investment of 14.6 billion USD. In the 2031-2035 period, 301km will be built, with a total investment of about 22.5 billion USD.
The total capital requirement for the capital's metro system by 2035 is about 37.1 billion USD. Through review, in the next 10 years, Hanoi can mobilize more than 28 billion USD to invest in the metro system. By 2035, Hanoi needs nearly 9 billion USD from the Central Government.
Early start of 2 metro lines
Mr. Duong Duc Tuan said that Hanoi City is focusing resources on building metro line 2, Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao section and metro line 3, Hanoi station - Hoang Mai section.
Of which, Hanoi plans to start construction of metro line 2 in 2025. For metro line 3, Hanoi hopes that relevant units will approve the proposal to use ODA capital to implement the next steps.
According to the plan, the Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao metro line has a total length of 11.5km, including 8.9km underground and 2.6km above ground, with 10 trains; the total investment of the project is about 35,588 billion VND. Hanoi is expected to complete this metro line in 2029.
The Hanoi – Hoang Mai metro line is 8.7km long, running underground along the Tran Hung Dao – Tran Thanh Tong – Kim Nguu – Nguyen Tam Trinh corridor; the total investment of the project is about 40,500 billion VND.
