Located in the middle of the "dinosaur spine" of the Ha Giang border region, the Chien Pho Ethnic Boarding Secondary School in Hoang Su Phi district is known as one of the places full of difficulties. With the support of the government and domestic and international organizations, students are fully equipped with technology devices connected to the internet for learning.
Hoang Su Phi is one of the poorest and most disadvantaged districts of Ha Giang province, located in the rocky plateau with rugged and harsh terrain. One of the most famous places in the district is the Chien Pho Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities, located in the middle of the "dinosaur's spine".
From the center of Hoang Su Phi district, to get to Chien Pho commune, we had to go through more than 20km of dangerous mountain forest road, one side was a deep abyss, the other side was a steep cliff.
On the way, we met children of Mong, Dao, Nung ethnic groups... walking from home to school to learn to read and write.
According to observations, although it is a particularly poor commune in the border area, Chien Pho has received state investment in very spacious and clean school facilities.
In addition, many domestic and international non-governmental and charitable organizations also support the education sector here with a lot of technological equipment to keep up with the trend of digital transformation and digital technology such as desktop computers, tablets, laptops... to help students easily access useful information in the cyberspace environment.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Luong, principal of Chien Pho Boarding Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities, Hoang Su Phi District, Ha Giang Province, said that in the 2023-2024 school year, the school has a total of 312 students, of which 173 are boarding students. Boarding students receive benefits according to Decree 116 of the Government, 40% of the minimum wage equivalent to 720,000 VND/month and an additional 15kg of rice.
"From 2019 to now, the school has received both spiritual and material support from many domestic and international organizations and charitable funds. In particular, the program to protect and support children to interact healthily and creatively in the online environment for the period 2021-2025 approved in Decision 830/QD-TTg dated June 1, 2021 of the Prime Minister and the program to prevent and combat gender-based violence to protect children and adolescents in the online environment of Plan International have been strongly implemented, helping children access useful information, and enhance skills to prevent violence and harmful information in cyberspace", Mr. Nguyen Hong Luong shared.
In addition to classroom education, Chien Pho Boarding Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities, Hoang Su Phi District, Ha Giang Province also regularly organizes activities and communication competitions to protect children and adolescents' safety in the online environment.
Communication activities have aroused enthusiasm, passion and creativity of ethnic minority students in the issue of cyber security.
To limit bad and toxic information in cyberspace, all communication activities are accompanied, supervised and guided by school teachers.
Moving to Ta Nhiu commune, although only about 10km from the center of Xin Man district, it took us more than 1 hour to reach Ta Nhiu secondary school for ethnic minorities, because the terrain is complex, strongly divided, and dangerous, mainly high mountains with steep slopes.
According to our observations, although it is a difficult border commune, at Ta Nhiu Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities, Ta Nhiu Commune, Xin Man District, Ha Giang Province, students are fully equipped with desktop computers connected to the internet to study topics on sex education, prevention of early marriage and incestuous marriage.
CV Minh (grade 9 student) of Ta Nhiu Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities shared: "Previously, in my village, many students dropped out of school and got married early, at the age of 14 or 15. Since going to school and participating in communication activities on preventing child marriage and incestuous marriage, my family and I have raised our awareness and skills, and I myself have actively participated in communicating to the people in the village."
According to a report by Plan International (an international non-profit organization in the field of children's rights with the aim of eliminating poverty and promoting comprehensive development), Vietnam has 77.93 million internet users. More and more people, including adolescents, use the internet to study, shop, entertain, communicate and access services. This contributes to increasing online risks for users, especially children and adolescents in particularly difficult areas facing gender-based violence and abuse in the online environment. Therefore, access to digital transformation and digital technology in communes in mountainous districts such as Xin Man and Hoang Su Phi in Ha Giang is always of interest to the organization and is increasingly popular, along with raising awareness, skills to protect and support children in the online environment.
