Pay hospital bills for strangers

“I have been following the trend of paying hospital fees for strangers for almost 3 years,” Uong Thuc Quyen’s emotional post on TikTok on August 6 received a lot of attention. She also shared how to implement the trend: she proactively contacted the social work departments of major hospitals, coordinated to go to give hospital fees and gifts to families in difficult circumstances.

On TikTok, when typing the phrase "paying hospital fees for strangers", a series of videos appear. Notably, the group Singing to Share has been quietly doing this work for a long time. According to the group's official figures, by the end of July, the amount of money the group paid for hospital fees for disadvantaged children at hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City such as Children's Hospital 1, Children's Hospital 2, Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion and Hematology... had reached more than 4 billion VND. The group's method is to learn about the circumstances, then directly pay according to the hospital's hospital fee receipt, without giving cash. Or like the case of TikToker Luong Do, who attracted attention when he posted a video supporting hospital fees for a family with a child with congenital heart disease at Children's Hospital 1 (Ho Chi Minh City). After that, he continued to return to the hospital to support other situations.

According to many young people, this form of charity is considered both practical, directly helping the right people, in the right circumstances, while avoiding the problems that arise from calling for contributions via account numbers as is often seen. "If there are conditions, this trend should be followed and expanded further. Practical actions, no fear of being cheated, no fear of charity money not reaching the needy", "This is what is called a trend", "Doing this way, there is no worry about money going to the wrong place" ... are comments left by users on social networking platforms. Even many young people, after learning about this trend, according to their actual conditions, have also realized it with meaningful actions.

In the context of social networks always being flooded with trends that are mostly entertaining, positive and negative, the trend of "paying hospital fees for strangers" is an act of empathy and sharing that does not always need to be ostentatious. Everyone can clearly see the immediate effectiveness, timely support for patients, support for families and inspiration for many others. However, when it becomes a trend of kindness, do not let it stop at spreading at a temporary level, but expand and maintain it for a long time. "Do it the right way, so that each contribution is not just money, but strength for children to overcome difficulties", the message on the fanpage of Children's Hospital 1 is really worth pondering.
