As previously reported, according to initial information from the Geophysical Agency of the Russian Academy of Sciences , an 8.0 magnitude earthquake occurred at around 11:30 a.m. on July 30 (local time) - around 6:30 a.m. Hanoi time, in the Far East region of Russia.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) later adjusted its assessment of the magnitude of this morning's earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula from 8.7 to 8.8.

According to the Russian Institute of Geological Sciences, this is the strongest earthquake since 1952. At this magnitude, the earthquake could cause aftershocks as strong as 7.5 in the next month. The Russian emergency response agency has issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas in the Far East.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also issued a tsunami watch for all of Hawaii and the Aleutian Islands of Alaska as well as some coastal areas of Japan.

A tsunami warning has also been issued for Japan's Pacific coast, with the Meteorological Agency warning that waves of up to 1 meter could hit land between 10am and 11am local time. The agency advised people to stay away from coastal areas. "Based on the initial earthquake parameters, widespread hazardous tsunami waves are possible," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

There are still mixed assessments of the magnitude of the earthquake that struck off the coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula this morning, but according to CNN, with a magnitude of 8.8, it is the sixth strongest earthquake ever recorded.
