What is a brain tumor?
According to doctors at K Hospital, brain tumors appear when abnormal cells form inside the brain. There are many types of brain tumors, including malignant and benign brain tumors.
Malignant brain tumors that originate in the brain are called primary brain tumors. Brain tumors that develop from cancer in another part of the body and spread to the brain are called secondary brain tumors, also known as brain metastases.
According to doctors at K Hospital, some risk factors leading to brain tumors include:
Age: The older a person is, the greater their risk of developing a brain tumor. Most brain tumors occur in adults between the ages of 85 and 89, although some types of brain tumors are more common in children under the age of 15.
Family history (genetics) : According to research, only 5-10% of all cancers are hereditary. Brain tumors account for only 2% of all cancers worldwide, so the rate of inherited brain tumors is very low. Some genetic conditions are known to increase the risk of brain tumors, including: tuberous sclerosis, neurofibromatosis type 1, type 2, Turner syndrome, Gorlin syndrome, etc.
Poor diet: Some studies have shown that dietary N-nitroso compounds may influence the risk of brain tumors in children and adults.
Overweight and obesity : Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing meningioma. Around 2% of all brain tumours diagnosed in the UK each year are due to being overweight or obese.
Chemical exposure: Some occupations due to their specific working environment require exposure to many chemicals that can increase the risk of brain cancer such as: Agricultural workers who are exposed to many pesticides; workers working in environments with many heavy metals (nickel, mercury); people working in the construction materials, roofing, tile, and shipbuilding industries due to exposure to many chemicals such as asbestos that can cause brain tumors.
Exposure to radiation : Ionizing radiation is a type of radiation used in some medical scans, such as X-rays and CT scans. People who have been exposed to ionizing radiation have a higher risk of developing brain tumors than the general population. However, brain tumors caused by radiation exposure are very rare (less than 1%).
Signs of brain tumor
Headache
Headache is one of the common symptoms, occurring in about 50% of brain tumor patients. Usually, the pain is worse in the early morning or at midnight, persistent, recurring every day, and increasing in both intensity and duration.
In young children, it is difficult to express themselves in words and they often show symptoms such as not eating, sleeping little, crying, and struggling.
Nausea and vomiting
In addition to headaches, patients with brain tumors often experience nausea and vomiting. Vomiting usually occurs in the morning, and after each vomiting, the patient will feel more tired but the headache will be less severe. If the patient vomits a lot, it can lead to exhaustion, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance.
Mood swings
Brain tumors can disrupt brain function, affecting personality and behavior. They can also cause unexplained mood swings.
Prolonged stress is a sign of brain tumor with symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, agitation, sleeping a lot, poor concentration or always being sleepy.
Weakness and numbness
Weakness, numbness, or tingling in the hands or feet. Usually, numbness occurs on one side of the body, especially in patients with supratentorial cerebellar syndrome.
Common symptoms include hemiplegia, hemiplegia or motor paralysis, speech and vision dysfunction, sleep disturbances, decreased concentration, and impaired consciousness.
Poor memory and confusion
Memory problems can be caused by a brain tumor in the frontal and temporal lobes. Tumors in the frontal and parietal lobes can also affect a person's ability to reason and make decisions.
Patients find it difficult to concentrate, get confused even with simple problems, cannot coordinate multiple tasks, and have difficulty planning anything.
Brain tumor prevention
According to experts, brain tumors cannot be completely prevented because the main cause of brain tumors has not yet been determined. Patients can only prevent brain tumors by minimizing potential risks such as:
- Give up bad habits: Drinking alcohol, smoking, staying up late, irregular living.
- Eat healthy: Rich in vegetables, fruits, vitamin C and limit foods rich in Nitrite such as smoked spray, canned food, fast food, grilled food, fried food.
- Increase physical activity: Exercise to improve overall health. Avoid radiation sources: Limit exposure to radiation sources or entering contaminated areas.
- Screening if family has someone carrying hereditary cancer gene.
