The Olympiad is held every two years and is considered the Olympics of chess, attracting 197 men's teams and 183 women's teams with nearly 2,000 athletes to compete. At this Olympiad, the Vietnamese men's chess team brought a squad of 5 players: Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Le Tuan Minh, Tran Tuan Minh, and Bang Gia Huy. With an average elo of 2,593, the Vietnamese team started in 21st place but created a big surprise when they won all 5 games against Liechtenstein, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Poland. In which, Le Quang Liem and his teammates made the entire world chess community admire when they defeated the reigning champion Uzbekistan in game 4. This is the team that owns the world's 6th ranked player Abdusattorov Nodirbek (elo 2,766) and a 22-match unbeaten streak. Not only that, the excellent performance of Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Le Tuan Minh along with the key role of the world's 14th ranked player Le Quang Liem helped the Vietnamese chess team continue to defeat another strong opponent, the Polish team of former European champion Duda Jan Krzysztof (elo 2,733).

The Vietnamese chess team, along with India, China, and Hungary, are the four teams that have won all five games. It is remarkable that the Vietnamese team, the lowest seed, is currently ranked highest at the Olympiad. Experts are particularly impressed with the professional stats achieved by the trio Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, and Le Tuan Minh. In the past games, Le Quang Liem achieved a chess strength equivalent to a player with an elo of 2,810, Truong Son achieved an elo of 2,849, and Le Tuan Minh achieved an elo of 2,810. It is important to know that the elo of chess player Carlsen (Norway) is ranked 1st on the World Chess Federation (FIDE) rankings at 2,832, while the 2nd ranked player Nakamura Hikaru (USA) is 2,802 to see that Truong Son's form and chess strength are very high.

With the Olympiad competing in the Swiss system with a total of 11 rounds, to achieve a high overall result, the teams must defeat most of the strong opponents. Therefore, Le Quang Liem and his teammates need to maintain maximum concentration and good playing condition. In round 6, the Vietnamese chess team faced the very strong Chinese team, the number 3 seed at the 2024 Olympiad. The team has an average elo of 2,724 with stars such as the reigning world champion - chess king Ding Liren (elo 2,736), Wei Yi (elo 2,762, ranked 8th in the world). The Chinese chess team is a big challenge for the Vietnamese team, but with their current form, Vietnamese fans are waiting for Le Quang Liem and his teammates to create a miracle in Hungary. And in the early morning of September 17 (Vietnam time), Quang Liem defeated world champion Dinh Liren, a resounding feat of Vietnamese chess, delighting fans at home.
