According to Techradar , CapCut (owned by ByteDance) - a free video editing application used by many content creators, has quietly updated its Terms of Service, causing concern among its community of millions of users.

Accordingly, Capcut will have the right to widely use all content uploaded by users, including facial images, voices and creative products, without paying any remuneration .

“CapCut now includes a provision granting them a worldwide, perpetual, royalty-free, transferable and sublicensable license to use, copy, distribute, modify, publicly perform and create derivative works from your content,” said Claudia Sandino, CEO of Omnivore Technology.

What's worrying is that the new terms don't just apply to published content, but extend to any user-uploaded content, whether in draft or private form.

CapCut's new terms apply not only to published content, but also extend to any user-uploaded content, whether in draft or private form.

“If you post a video with your face or voice, CapCut may use it in advertising or other media, without notice or payment,” Sandino warns.

Another point of contention is that CapCut retains full usage rights even if the user deletes the account.

What's more concerning is that CapCut doesn't allow users to opt out or opt out of these terms, which particularly affects commercial or consumer content creators.

As noted, CapCut in Vietnam has not yet displayed the new policy. However, many users have expressed their anger at the platform's new terms, claiming that the application is infringing on privacy and content ownership rights.

Mr. Le Hong Duc, founder of OneAds Digital Company Limited, said that CapCut's exploitation of data from users for free is part of its business model. However, the platform needs to be transparent and clearly warn users about which videos are being used, for what purpose, and whether it brings commercial benefits to anyone.

“The platform must ensure privacy, use content only for the right purposes and comply with local laws. Not all videos are suitable for commercial exploitation. Given the new terms, users should consider continuing to use CapCut,” Mr. Duc shared.

According to the technology world, users can learn and switch to using other video editing platforms besides CapCut, such as VivaCut, ADobe Premiere Rush, Filmora, InShot, Canva...
