Close-up of the second tunnel of Dien Chau - Bai Vot highway, costing over 2,100 billion VND

TPO - The Dien Chau - Bai Vot Expressway has 4 lanes, but the section passing through Than Vu tunnel in Nghe An province has only 2 lanes, causing bottlenecks and traffic jams. The Ministry of Construction has just agreed on the investment policy to complete the second Than Vu tunnel soon with a total investment of more than 2,100 billion VND.

Than Vu Tunnel is an important project of the North-South expressway in the East, part of the Dien Chau - Bai Vot expressway project, which was opened to traffic 1 year ago.

Than Vu Tunnel and the road system (viaduct) pass through the rugged mountainous and river areas of Tan Chau and Than Linh communes, Nghe An province.

Due to the difficult and dangerous construction conditions and high costs, in the investment phase (phase 1), Than Vu tunnel has only completed one side of the tunnel and is currently being organized for two lanes in both directions. Meanwhile, the highway leading to the tunnel has 4 lanes (2 lanes in each direction), so during peak travel times, traffic through the tunnel is often congested.

To reduce traffic congestion and complete the second tunnel, the Ministry of Construction has just agreed with the proposal of relevant units to invest and complete the second tunnel with a total cost of more than 2,100 billion VND (budget money).

In phase 1, tunnel number two (located parallel and 45 meters from the first tunnel in the North-South direction), has been dug through the mountain and installed with retaining walls. Currently, the project continues to carry out the finishing phase and build a viaduct to widen the tunnel access road. Photo of the scene inside the second Than Vu tunnel.

It is expected that after the tunnel and the second viaduct (red line) open to traffic in 2027, Than Vu tunnel and the access road will be 6 lanes wide (3 lanes on each side of the tunnel).

According to the design and construction, the Than Vu tunnel and the viaduct system across the stream to access the tunnel have a total length of more than 8 km, of which the tunnel through the mountain is 1,130 meters long (twin tunnel). After completion, the two Than Vu tunnels will be 6 lanes wide, with a designed speed of 80-100 km/h. The second tunnel is expected to start construction in 2025, be basically completed in 2026 and put into operation in 2027.
