Four IT students win $20,000 prize

A group of students from the University of Information Technology won first prize in the ASEAN Cyber ​​Shield hacking competition with a prize of 20,000 USD (nearly 500 million VND).

The four students are all third-year students majoring in Information Security at the University of Information Technology, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City. They are Nguyen Dang Nguyen, Phan Vinh Khang, To Dinh Nguyen, and Le Khac Trung Nam.

Dr. Nguyen Tan Tran Minh Khang, Vice Principal of the University of Information Technology, said that 20,000 USD is the highest prize value in competitions that the school's students have achieved.

ASEAN Cyber ​​Shield (ACS) 2023 is a competition to discover and nurture cybersecurity talent, co-organized by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), with a total prize of 77,000 USD. This year's competition takes place in Jakarta, Indonesia, from November 21 to 24.

37 teams from 10 countries in the region compete in two groups. The General Group is open to a wide range of contestants, while the Student Group is for university students.

Round 1 requires teams to challenge each topic, then choose 5 teams with the highest scores from each table. The teams continue to compete in round 2 with the form of attack and defense (Attack - Defense). In this round, the organizers present real-life situations of hackers attacking the system, the contestants play the role of security experts whose task is to fight against external attacks while still ensuring the system's operation.

The group of students from the University of Information Technology won first prize in the General category. In addition, two other Vietnamese representatives, Duy Tan University won second prize in the General category, and Hanoi University of Science and Technology won first prize in the Student category.
