From a discarded log, Mr. Doan Thuoc created a work called Sun Wukong. |
In Mr. Doan Thuoc’s house, dozens of works are made from wood with unique shapes such as Sun Wukong, sunflowers, Ha Long Bay, seals, cottontail squirrels, penguins and termite mounds growing mushrooms. Previously, Mr. Thuoc often went to the beach to collect driftwood after each flood season to use as firewood. 3 years ago, he came up with the idea of selecting tree stumps to create animal shapes, making the house more lively.
His first work was called Sun Wukong. After picking up a long piece of wood, he sketched the image of a monkey. Mr. Thuoc meticulously carried out each step, from sketching the idea, cleaning and scrubbing the tree, to removing damaged and termite-eaten wood... “I am a mason. To create a work, I use simple masonry tools such as saws, sickles, hammers and chisels to carve and edit,” he said.

Introducing the work Song Hy, Mr. Thuoc shared, from the damaged piece of wood, I imagined a pair of birds facing each other. From there, I meticulously chiseled, creating the shape of two birds under the shadow of a python. For the work Ha Long Bay, Mr. Thuoc sketched from a photo, creating the image of large and small islands using two large and small pieces of wood. In the collection, the work Hoa Chuoi is also very unique and many people have compared it to a torch.

For Mr. Thuoc, each work is like a brainchild, he cherishes and respects it. Many friends who visit his house often admire his rustic but unique collection. Among them, the work Dragon riding a cloud leaves a strong impression. From an old, bent piece of wood, he shaped it into a lively dragon. He also used a large piece of wood to make a pedestal underneath. Mr. Thuoc said, I often take advantage of my free time to be creative. Some works take several days to complete, while others only take one day. For large works, I measure carefully and use glue. To make the product shiny and beautiful, I have to use colored paint.
After a hard day's work, Mr. Thuoc often makes a pot of tea, sits and sips a hot cup of tea and admires the fruits of his labor, bringing spiritual joy to life.
