Previously, in December 2023, Pope Francis shared that he wanted a simple funeral and to be buried at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome.
“The tomb must be underground, simple, without special decorations and with only one inscription: Franciscus,” reads Pope Francis' will published by the Vatican.
On April 26, Pope Francis' funeral was held in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican, attended by many heads of state and hundreds of thousands of people from around the world.
Dean of the College of Cardinals Giovanni Battista Re, who presided over the funeral, praised Pope Francis as “a people's Pope, with a heart open to all.”
Pope Francis was later buried in the Basilica of St. Mary Major, becoming the first pope to be buried outside the Vatican in more than 100 years.
