The Vietnam Federation of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the American Chamber of Commerce in Hanoi (AmCham) have just sent a letter calling on President Trump to temporarily suspend the imposition of reciprocal tariffs.

Specifically, VCCI and AmCham jointly sent a letter to the US Secretary of Commerce, calling on the Trump Administration to suspend the imposition of reciprocal tariffs to avoid disrupting business operations, negatively affecting previous trade transactions, and disrupting the logistics chain.

As two organizations representing the Vietnamese and American business communities, VCCI and AmCham simultaneously hope that the two governments will have an open dialogue and cooperate to build a constructive program that contributes to reducing the US trade deficit with Vietnam, towards improving living standards and promoting common prosperity for both countries.

In the letter, the leaders of the two organizations expressed deep concern over President Trump's announcement of reciprocal tariffs.

The letter stressed that, if implemented, these unexpectedly high new tariffs would negatively impact the operations of member businesses and consumers, as well as affect the bilateral trade relationship.

“Reducing tariffs on products imported into Vietnam as well as on goods serving US consumers is the factor that supports US businesses, the economy and consumers. Increasing tariffs will not bring the same effect,” the letter stated.

VCCI and AmCham believe that the Vietnamese Government is seriously implementing positive solutions that demonstrate a strong commitment to improving the bilateral trade balance, while removing barriers that US businesses and investors are facing.

The letter also noted that last week, Vietnam reduced tariffs on 13 groups of goods – a real boon for US exporters. Vietnamese leaders also pledged to facilitate the import of more products from the US.

VCCI and AmCham will continue to work closely with relevant authorities to address challenges in digital trade, pharmaceutical imports, intellectual property rights, customs and tax procedures, government procurement, data management and security, and many other areas.

The letter also asserted that Vietnam has become one of the fastest-growing export markets for the United States. With Vietnam’s burgeoning middle class, there are tremendous opportunities for American businesses in agriculture, aviation, energy, equipment, pharmaceuticals, technology, and many other sectors – thereby creating more jobs and prosperity for the United States. The letter emphasized that the economies of the two countries are highly complementary, rather than directly competitive.

VCCI and AmCham also expressed their support to the US Secretary of Commerce for the proposal to move towards a bilateral agreement as in the phone call between President Trump and General Secretary To Lam last Friday, towards removing tariffs and trade barriers between the two countries. A quick and fair agreement will help create stability for businesses and contribute to adjusting the trade imbalance in a mutually beneficial direction.

In the past few days, VCCI has been working with relevant agencies to carry out actions to support the business community in responding to the US's issuance of reciprocal taxes on imported goods into this country.

VCCI has co-signed a letter with AmCham to the US Department of Commerce (DOC) regarding the above content.

In addition, VCCI also sent letters directly to DOC, US Trade Representative (USTR), US Chamber of Commerce (US Chamber) and relevant agencies.

According to VCCI, the trade relationship between Vietnam and the US is one of the exemplary relationships in international trade.

American businesses not only contribute to economic development, but also contribute to the formation of a market economy and promote the development of private enterprises. Vietnamese businesses are also gradually investing in the US, contributing to job creation in the US.

The two economies of Vietnam and the US are complementary, not competitive. And the Vietnamese government has taken many practical and effective measures to reduce the trade deficit.

VCCI hopes that the US government will postpone imposing tariffs on Vietnam and hopes that the two governments will soon negotiate to achieve common benefits for the people, businesses and prosperity of the two countries.
