At the conference, Mr. Le Thanh Tung, Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Rice Industry Association, Former Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production, reported briefly on the project and implementation results of the project "Sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta region by 2023".

Mr. Le Thanh Tung said that after more than 1 year of implementing the project, there have been dozens of pilot farming models according to the project standards in the Mekong Delta provinces. The pilot farming models have brought high efficiency such as: Reducing the amount of fertilizers, pesticides, increasing rice yield, reducing emissions and importantly, the quality of rice produced from the model has been improved. The Mekong Delta provinces are currently planning to produce according to the project on up to tens of thousands of hectares.

The Mekong Delta is a key rice production region in Vietnam, making an important contribution to food security and rice exports worldwide . However, the region is facing many challenges such as climate change, resource degradation, and increasing production costs, while the international market is increasingly demanding in terms of quality, product traceability, and carbon emission reduction.

Mr. Le Duc Thinh, Director of the Department of Economic Cooperation and Rural Development, pointed out: Currently, rice production still lacks cooperation and linkage; fragmented production; depends on intermediaries... Meanwhile, the demand for farmers to participate in applying technology to implement digital transformation and green transformation is very large. There are about 2 million rice farming households, 1,230 cooperatives, cooperative groups and 210 rice trading enterprises that will participate in the implementation of the Project.

Mr. Ono Masuo - Consulate General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City - highly appreciated the potential of agriculture in the Mekong Delta. Digital transformation, green transformation and application of agricultural production in Vietnam bring positive values to Vietnamese agriculture. He hopes that Japan and Vietnam will cooperate to green transformation and digital transformation for agriculture in the Mekong Delta.

At the conference, delegates discussed important issues such as assessing investment needs, applying technology in digital transformation and green transformation in cooperatives and linked value chains; sharing lessons learned from the results of the pilot project on digital transformation and green transformation of agriculture in the Mekong Delta; introducing advanced technologies from Japanese enterprises to support cooperatives in optimizing production.
