Nghe An has 27 border communes. In recent years, with the attention of the State, most of the border communes have been invested in upgrading traffic, so the roads to the commune centers have basically been convenient. However, the border commune of Nam Giai (Que Phong) is considered the most difficult, because this road has not been upgraded or expanded for more than 22 years, causing many difficulties for vehicles entering Nam Giai commune.

According to the reporter's records in March 2024, there were quite a lot of vehicles on this route, however, there were many potholes, many landslides, negative slope landslides, even creating craters that occupied almost the entire road. Some points, although temporarily repaired by pouring concrete, were not significant, creating a patchwork that could be seen with the naked eye.

Mr. Lo Minh Xuyen - a resident of Mo village, Nam Giai commune shared: This is the only road into the commune, we travel every day, but it is very degraded. During the rainy season, people almost always fall off their bikes or have accidents due to going into potholes and water holes. The scariest thing is that there are many landslides, rocks and soil falling down blocking the road, people are isolated for many days if there is no leveling machine.
Mr. Lo Minh Tuong - Chairman of Nam Giai Commune People's Committee said: Chau Kim road to the center of Nam Giai commune is 16 km long, not including the distance from the center of the commune to all the villages, which is 9.5 km more. This unique road to Nam Giai has been invested in upgrading and paving since 2002, the road surface is 3m wide, the characteristic of the route is that one side is a mountain, the other side is a cliff with many difficult turns.

After decades of use, the entire route has now been damaged and degraded, with many points frequently experiencing landslides during the rainy and stormy season, causing traffic jams for days. When the road is eroded, the commune must mobilize businesses and residents to clear the road; in addition, every year the commune mobilizes local residents to clear the road on both sides.
“Although the district invests in repairing the road every year, due to the deterioration of the entire route, along with the large number of cars transporting raw wood and landslides caused by floods, the road is increasingly damaged. The locality wishes for the State to invest in upgrading the road so that people have favorable conditions for economic development. Although it is a border commune, Nam Giai has strengths in developing models of raising livestock, poultry, planting and protecting forests,” Mr. Lo Minh Tuong shared.

Speaking to reporters, a representative of Que Phong district said: Among the roads from the center of Kim Son town to the communes, the road to Nam Giai is currently the worst road in the district due to many degraded points. In fact, every year, the district has allocated over 1 billion VND for maintenance and repair, however, due to limited budget, it only focuses on fixing the weakest and most severe points for people to travel. In the long term, upgrading the entire road is a very difficult problem.
In the coming time, the district will propose to all levels to support funding for road repair, and at the same time integrate programs and projects in the development of border communes to have more funding for road construction, ensuring traffic as well as economic development of Nam Giai commune./.
