The asteroid was discovered by the Asteroid Earth Collision Alert System (ATLAS) on August 7 and published by researchers in Research Notes of the AAS. Calculations of its trajectory suggest it will become Earth's satellite on September 29.

The little moon will be our companion for 56.6 days, completing a full orbit around Earth in that time. The rock will then escape Earth's gravity on November 25, returning to orbit around the Sun. 2024 PT₅ will then make its final pass on January 9, 2025, at a distance of 1.8 million kilometers from Earth before fading back into the darkness. 2024 PT₅ is expected to return on November 8, 2055.
