On April 12, according to the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue province, this agency has directed the People's Committees of districts, towns and cities in the area to establish district-level working groups to coordinate the implementation of large-scale timber production forest plantation development associated with sustainable forest management certification.

In addition to district-level working groups, Thua Thien Hue also established a provincial-level working group with the participation of many relevant agencies to implement the development of large-scale timber production forests.

According to the plan of the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue province, this locality aims to have 14,000 hectares of large-wood acacia plantation forests by the end of 2025 to provide raw materials for sawmilling and processing. Of which, about 11,500 hectares of large-wood acacia plantation forests are managed by households and individuals and 2,500 hectares of large-wood acacia plantation forests are managed by state forest owners.

Up to now, in the whole Thua Thien Hue province, there have been 12 state forest owners whose sustainable forest management plans have been approved by competent authorities with a total area of ​​203,522.66 hectares.

By the end of the first quarter of 2024, the total area of ​​large timber production forests in the province reached 12,420.91 hectares, including the area of ​​large timber production forests and the conversion of small timber to large timber of acacia species of 11,742.77 hectares (of which state forest owners are 3,466.86 hectares, individual households are 8,275.91 hectares), the area of ​​native tree production forests is 681.14 hectares (of which the area of ​​state forest owners is 550.92 hectares, the area of ​​other forest owners is 130.22 hectares).

The total forest area in the province that has been granted sustainable forest management certificates to date is 11,924.51 hectares, of which 3,117.20 hectares are owned by state organizations and 8,807.31 hectares are owned by households, individuals and other organizations.

The development of large-scale timber production forests associated with sustainable forest management certification in the province is facing some shortcomings and limitations such as: The purchasing market is still erratic; forest owners are still afraid of falling trees when encountering storms and tornadoes; the area of ​​forest planted by households is still small and fragmented; the search and connection with businesses purchasing wood products with FSC forest certification is still limited; people have difficulty accessing seedlings...

According to Vice Chairman of Thua Thien Hue Provincial People's Committee Hoang Hai Minh, the Provincial People's Committee has assigned the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to preside over and coordinate with the Department of Planning and Investment and the Department of Finance to study policy mechanisms to support resources for the development of large-scale timber production forests associated with sustainable forest management certification. The province focuses on prioritizing the integration of programs and projects into the task of developing large-scale timber forests to improve forest productivity and quality, contribute to biodiversity conservation, protect the ecological environment and reduce emissions.

The province also directed the development and promulgation of technical guidelines for planting large timber forests suitable to local conditions; strictly and effectively managed forestry seed sources; prioritized the selection of high-quality forestry seed varieties suitable to the requirements of planting large timber production forests; reviewed the planning of land funds for planting large timber production forests and economic forest tree species suitable to site conditions in each ecological region.
