On the evening of May 10, Dr. Trinh My Duyen, Department of Internal Medicine - Allergy - Immunology - Musculoskeletal, Thanh Hoa Children's Hospital said that the overall health of all 4 children after the incident of the expired 6-in-1 vaccine injection is relatively stable, no fever, good breastfeeding, no difficulty breathing or rash, normal heart and lungs.

The health of 4 children after the incident of injection of expired 6-in-1 vaccine is relatively stable.

Doctors at Thanh Hoa Children's Hospital monitor the health of children after the incident of expired 6-in-1 vaccine injection.

Currently, doctors are continuing to closely monitor the symptoms and health of the children. After 1-2 days, liver enzyme function tests will be performed again to take measures to intervene if there are any unusual developments. However, the increase in liver enzymes is due to many different causes and cannot be confirmed to be due to expired vaccines.

Previously, on the morning of May 9, Thang Binh Commune Health Station (Nong Cong) organized vaccination services at the health station with vaccines: Hexaxim and Synflorix for 15 children of vaccination age in the area, including 6 children receiving the first dose of Hexaxim 6-in-1 vaccine. After the injection, the children were monitored according to regulations and Thang Binh Commune Health Station provided the boxes of the vaccine vials for families to take home for monitoring. At 10:06 a.m. on the same day, Thang Binh Commune Health Station received feedback from the family of a child who was vaccinated with Hexaxim about the expiration date of the injected vaccine on the box for the family to take home, which was marked as March 31, 2023. Thang Binh Commune Health Station checked the records and vaccine bottles kept at the station, compared and verified the vaccine boxes brought home by the nursery staff and discovered that in 6 Hexaxim vaccine bottles, 4 bottles had an expiration date of March 31, 2023, and the remaining 2 bottles had an expiration date of May 31, 2024.

Immediately, medical staff and leaders of Thang Binh commune were present at the families to check the health status of the children and coordinated with the families to arrange transportation to take the children to Thanh Hoa Children's Hospital for examination and health care on the afternoon of May 9. 3 children with fever symptoms (from 37.6 0 C to 38.5 0 C), 1 child with increased liver enzymes is currently receiving 5% Glucose infusion.

Notably, the 4 expired vaccine vials mentioned above were injected into 4 children. Mr. and Mrs. Vu Hoa's family has 2 twins and 1 of the 2 children was injected with the expired vaccine (it is not yet determined which child was injected with the expired vaccine), therefore, the family took both twins and the remaining 3 children to the hospital for health monitoring.

Doctor Phan Van Chuong, Head of the Thang Binh Commune Health Station, admitted that the above mistake was due to the negligence of the vaccination staff who did not follow the correct safe vaccination procedure and did not carefully check and compare the expiration dates on the medicine box and vaccine vial. The leaders and staff of the Thang Binh Commune Health Station directly admitted their mistakes to the children's families and will accompany the families in the process of monitoring the children's health.

According to Mr. Tran Anh Nam, Director of Nong Cong District Medical Center, after the above incident, the unit conducted a review and confirmed that the 4 vials of 6-in-1 Hexaxim vaccine injected into children on May 9 at Thang Binh Medical Station were the last vials of the vaccine batch imported by Nong Cong District Medical Center from May 23, 2022, with a total of 165 doses.

The health of 4 children after the incident of injection of expired 6-in-1 vaccine is relatively stable.

Currently, the health of the children after the incident of the expired 6-in-1 vaccine injection is relatively stable.

Talking to us, Deputy Director in charge of the Department of Health Nguyen Ba Can said that after the incident of the expired 6-in-1 vaccine injection at the Thang Binh Commune Health Station, the health sector has directed the provincial Center for Disease Control to continue to coordinate with Thanh Hoa Children's Hospital to care for, treat, and ensure the health safety of the children. Directing medical units and vaccination facilities in the sector to review the implementation of vaccination safety, ensuring vaccination safety during the vaccination process. At the same time, continue to clarify the cause and responsibility of related organizations and individuals.
