Entering the final day with a two-stroke lead over second place, Rory McIlroy was unexpectedly caught by Justin Rose after 15 holes. Although he only needed a par on hole 18 to win the championship, he made a bogey, forcing him into a playoff.
The two played again at the 18th hole and this time, McIlroy made no mistake: he scored a birdie, while Rose only made a par, thereby officially becoming the 2025 Masters champion.
Justin Rose’s spectacular breakthrough almost created a great comeback. With a final round of 66, 9 strokes lower than the third round, Rose rose from a tie for 6th place to finish at -11, equal with McIlroy after 72 holes.
Meanwhile, McIlroy had a rough start when he had a double bogey on the first hole. He scored 3 birdies from holes 3 to 10, but lost the advantage when he had a bogey on hole 11, par on hole 12, then double bogey and bogey consecutively on holes 13 and 14.
However, his champion's spirit helped him make important birdies at holes 15 and 17 to regain the lead. At hole 18, he hit into the bunker to save par, but the final putt missed the target, forcing the match to be extended by one hole.
This victory has special meaning for McIlroy, not only because it helps him complete the Grand Slam of his career with the prestigious green jacket, but also because it ends his 11-year drought of major titles. Previously, McIlroy had stepped onto the podium of glory at the US Open (2011), The Open (2014), PGA Championship (2012 & 2014).
During this time, McIlroy's best result at Augusta was runner-up in 2022. Now, he has officially made his name in history, becoming the 6th golfer to have a complete set of major titles, along with legends Gene Sarazen, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Tiger Woods.
Rory McIlroy will receive $4.2 million in prize money. Justin Rose, with his persistent efforts, received $2.268 million for second place.
Patrick Reed finished in 3rd place with a score of (-9), Scottie Scheffler in 4th place with a score of 1 stroke less, Im Sung-jae and Bryson DeChambeau tied for 5th place with a score of (-7)
The next major of the year – the PGA Championship – will begin on May 15 at Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte.
