Scientists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have conducted research on laboratory animals with a gene mutation that causes autism.

They found that reducing nitric oxide levels in the brain led to a reduction in autistic scores and behaviors. The animals became more sociable, performed fewer repetitive behaviors, were less anxious, and showed greater interest in new objects. Neuronal scores also improved significantly.

The researchers also found evidence of a link between nitric oxide and autism in stem cells and clinical blood samples taken from children with low-functioning autism (LFA) — a level of autism characterized by difficulties with communication and social interaction, sleep disturbances, aggressive behavior, and self-injury. Nitric oxide is a gas produced by cells throughout the body that plays a major role in many functions, including blood pressure regulation, inflammation, and immune system function. However, high levels of nitric oxide can be harmful.
