To be among the rare group in the world to achieve a perfect SAT score, candidates need to have comprehensive excellence in reading comprehension, reasoning and logical thinking skills, but first of all, effective study and test-taking strategies.

Pham Do Thai An (grade 12 Biology major, Hanoi National University of Education High School) said that during the 3 months of SAT preparation, in addition to studying at a center, he searched for materials online to practice.

An assessed that the Math section of the SAT was not too difficult. “Although the test covers many types of math such as equations, lines, trigonometry... for Vietnamese students, this knowledge is not a puzzle.”

However, An said that there are some questions that are "easy to trick" if candidates do not pay attention, for example, instead of asking to find x, the question will ask to find 3x, 4x. If candidates do not read the question carefully, they will easily get confused.

Pham Do Thai An (grade 12 Biology major, Hanoi National University of Education High School for the Gifted) achieved a perfect SAT score of 1,600.

For An, the challenge is not in the Math section but in the Reading and Writing section. The female student often makes mistakes in the Words in context type exercises. To improve, each time she makes a mistake, An often writes down the content she often makes mistakes in, and at the end of the week, she prints it into a book to correct.

One of An's secrets when doing the Reading and Writing section is to avoid reading and translating each sentence - which is quite time-consuming. Instead, she looks for keywords, grasps the main idea of the passage, thereby increasing her reading speed and making it easier to understand. "Some students have the habit of memorizing sentences that are often repeated in the test. But in reality, sometimes the test can keep the first part of the passage and change the question. If you rely on the similarity without paying attention to the question, choosing what you know will be very easy to make mistakes. Therefore, the effective way to study is to practice thinking to solve the problem," An said.

Nguyen Thi Dieu Anh (grade 12 English 1, Ha Tinh High School for the Gifted, Ha Tinh province) shared that to have good learning results, she focuses on mastering basic knowledge before expanding or gradually increasing advanced exercises.

Female students always focus on listening to lectures and taking advantage of solving homework so that they have time at home to search for and learn new or supplementary knowledge.

Dieu Anh always tries to practice speaking and using English in all daily activities and contexts. She learns naturally, without forcing herself to listen to a certain number of hours each day...

Nguyen Thi Dieu Anh (grade 12 English 1, Ha Tinh Specialized High School, Ha Tinh province) achieved a perfect SAT score of 1,600.

Before each exam, Dieu Anh tries to practice as many questions as possible. “I learn by practicing questions and always have a notebook to write down my mistakes while practicing. Whenever I make a mistake, I will focus on studying more and reading more about that area,” the female student said.

Dieu Anh believes that the spirit of always trying and not giving up is also very important. To achieve a perfect SAT score, she had to take the test twice. On her first attempt, she only got 1,390 - a score lower than expected.

“When I received the results that were not as expected, I was quite sad. But after thinking about it, I realized that the score at that time was a true reflection of my lack of preparation and investment. I told myself to try harder and be more determined, and the results were worth it,” Dieu Anh said.

Nguyen Hoang Minh (class 12A2 IT, High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences - Hanoi National University) said that the SAT test not only requires a foundation in English, but also requires candidates to learn how to think. "Especially the Reading Comprehension section, it is not just about being able to translate, the test also assesses candidates' thinking," Minh said.

The male student also said that having an effective test-taking strategy is very important.

Before the exam, I spent a lot of time doing and correcting the questions, thereby recognizing my strengths and weaknesses and not being afraid to discuss with teachers to overcome my weaknesses.

“I often collect exam questions from previous years that people share online. When I do the test, if I get any questions wrong, I take notes to supplement my knowledge and do similar questions,” Minh said.

Minh said that the time pressure of the SAT is quite high. For example, the Reading section has 27 questions in 32 minutes; that is, on average, only a little over 1 minute to solve a question. “While a question on the test can be very long and has many distracting details, it is necessary to focus highly on the core information and increase reading speed.”

This is the reason why when practicing and doing tests, I always time myself and try to improve my speed. “Vocabulary and grammar are two parts that are not too difficult in the SAT, so I determined to do them as quickly as possible to save time for the Reading section. I usually divide my time, for example 5 minutes for vocabulary, 5 minutes for grammar, and the rest for Reading. For the Reading section - one of the most difficult parts of the test, I usually do the difficult exercises first and then do the easy ones, marking the questions I am not sure about to come back to later,” Minh shared.

Every day, male students emphasize effective and quality learning instead of quantity of study hours or homework.
