On June 2, the Can Tho City Police Department announced that the unit had issued a decision to prosecute and temporarily detain Le Nhat Nguyen (30 years old, residing in Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City) to investigate the act of abusing his position and power while performing official duties. The former was a customer management staff at the Thot Not transaction office of a bank in Can Tho City, and had appropriated 5.5 billion VND from 2 customers.

Taking advantage of customer trust

Previously, Ms. TTTM (32 years old) and her younger sister, Ms. TTME (22 years old, both living in Thot Not District, Can Tho City) filed a complaint accusing Nguyen of abusing trust and appropriating property worth 5.5 billion VND.

According to the initial investigation results, from August to December 2022, Nguyen played with Binance virtual currency and lost 1.75 billion VND. The more he played, the more he lost, so Nguyen had the idea of ​​appropriating assets. During the process of making documents and monitoring the loan applications of 2 customers, Ms. M. and E., Nguyen found that both had large limits but were negligent in signing documents.

On February 10, Mr. TVH (father of the two sisters M. and E.) contacted Nguyen to request a disbursement of 2.5 billion VND from E.'s account to his account to pay for the purchase of rice. Knowing E.'s habit of signing or looking at the first page, Nguyen made an IOU exactly as Mr. H. requested and placed it on top, while Nguyen placed the other documents below.

In these fake documents, Nguyen himself added the name of a recipient named NTD with the amount of 2.5 billion VND. After completing the documents, Nguyen asked Ms. E. to sign. Ms. E. signed and took a photo of the first page, but did not check the remaining pages.

After that, Nguyen destroyed the first page and used the remaining documents to present to the leader for approval to disburse another 2.5 billion VND to Ms. NTD. Before disbursing, Nguyen asked Ms. NTD to help receive the 2.5 billion VND and then transfer it back to Nguyen. A few days later, Ms. E. discovered that the disbursed amount was up to 5 billion VND, so she called to ask and was explained by Nguyen that it was due to a system error.

Seizing customers' money to pay debts and play virtual money

On February 24, taking advantage of the fact that the credit contract with Ms. M. was about to expire, Nguyen asked Ms. M. to come to the transaction office to sign a new contract. Nguyen made another set of documents with the content that Ms. M. requested to disburse 2 billion VND to the consumer's account to pay for rice purchases.

Ms. M. also trusted Nguyen, so when she signed, she did not read the entire content. Then, Nguyen submitted it to the leader for approval to disburse the money. Just like the previous time, Ms. D. was also asked by Nguyen to receive this amount of money and then transfer it back to Nguyen.

On March 31, Mr. H. contacted Nguyen to request the disbursement of 1 billion VND from Ms. M.'s loan to pay for rice purchases for Mr. NHN. When completing the documents, Nguyen continued to add Ms. NTD's name with the requested disbursement amount of 1 billion VND. Just like the previous time, because she trusted Nguyen, Ms. M. signed without reading the documents again. The 1 billion VND disbursed into Ms. D.'s account was also transferred back to Nguyen.

At the police station, Nguyen admitted to embezzling 5.5 billion VND from the two sisters M. and E. Nguyen used the embezzled money to pay off the bank debt and pay another person 1.8 billion VND. Nguyen continued to play with virtual money and lost the rest.
